Carolina Bauernhaus in Anderson SC is in the path of totality on Aug 21, and happens to be a great place with great beers. They open at 11am and totality starts at 2:12. They’re releasing special beers for the occasion: https://www.facebook.com/events/490016578004492/?acontext=%7B%22action_history%22%3A%22[%7B%5C%22surface%5C%22%3A%5C%22page%5C%22%2C%5C%22mechanism%5C%22%3A%5C%22page_upcoming_events_card%5C%22%2C%5C%22extra_data%5C%22%3A[]%7D]%22%2C%22has_source%22%3Atrue%7D

I’ll be there if anyone wants to meet up

I had originally planned to go to upstate SC to see the eclipse. Weather reports for that area though are forecasting scattered thunderstorms. Skies in Eastern Tennessee are supposed to be clearer. I plan to stay in Kingsport TN the night before and choose a direction based on the weather reports.

The Rogue Farms tap room is going to be as close to the center of the totality path as you can possibly get. That was my original plan, but I’ll be in the hamlet of Brooks which loses me a few seconds of totality but allows me to hang out with a good friend.

Brooks is a terrible place.....just saying

Yeah, I’m pretty concerned about getting around. I’m expecting gridlock on the back roads as well.

We’ll soon get a look at what zombie apocalypse-scale traffic would be like

I’m expecting a full-on shit show all weekend. Our original plan had us popping over the mountains to Bend on Sunday, but that plan was pretty damn stupid.

I planned going down to Cave Junction camping..but all the Californians have booked the sites for the weekend and wil head up to Salem on Monday morning.

Weather reports aren’t good for the Greenville SC area, but I’ll still head to Carolina Bauernhaus for the beer, even if I miss seeing the eclipse

Brooks is a terrible place for viewing the eclipse or just a terrible place?

My dear friend who lives there is from Kermit, Texas which is also not quite Oz.

Any bets on whether I’ll be able to travel back roads to Salem area during the wee hours of the morning?

This may be the unpopular opinion, but as an optician who works with an optometrist every day, it’s mine (and her) professional opinion that’s it’s a bad idea to look directly at the sun. Even during a solar eclipse, it will only be "safe" to view during the TOTAL eclipse, and only Nashville is really getting that coverage. Even with "protective" glasses, you will do damage to your eyes if you look directly at the sun.

You’re gonna have a tough time rating a beer’s appearance if you’re accelerating macular degeneration or just flat out blind.

"You’re gonna have a tough time rating a beer’s appearance if you’re a ccelerating macular degeration or just flat out blind."

It really hits home when you put it that way.
