Welcome to Ratebeer News, a roundup of the week’s beer news. News and Notes Waterloo, Ontario’s Brick Brewing will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on December 18th with the launch (and free tasting from 1-5pm) of its commemorative 20th Anniversary Pilsener. There will be 500 magnums of this beer available. Brick is best-known for its winter Bock. Heineken will be brewing its flagship beer in Indonesia in the new year, at the Bintang plant, of which it is 75% owner. After 13 years, the president of Russia’s Baltika Brewing has resigned. Taimuraz Bolloev stewarded the company into that country’s market leader in the wake of the collapse of the USSR and the privatization of Russia’s breweries. Baltika is also a major player in other CIS countries. The LCBO in Ontario has decided to pull Delerium Tremens from store shelves after receiving a complaint about the name. Delerium Tremens, from Huyghe of Belgium, is sold in many countries around the world. Nobody else has taken issue with the name. The Granite City Food & Brewery company has entered into a lease that will result in its 9th location, to open this summer in Wichita. Tanzania Breweries and Uganda Breweries have settled a long-running court case over the latter’s attempt to register Champion Lager as a brand. TB has a brand called Bia Bingwa, which translates to “champion beer”. The merger of Molson and Coors has received SEC approval. Closures Amongst this week’s brewery closures was Vervifontaine in Belgium, makers of the Fagnard line, amongst others. The Fagnard Blonde proved especially popular on Ratebeer.com and will be missed. The Orbit brewpub/nightclub in Bangkok has closed for renovations. It will re-open in the new year as the Soprano House and Gatsby’s. The equipment is still on site but it is uncertain what this means for the future of craft beer on the site. The former Orbit beers are still available at the Airport Brewhouse at Bangkok’s Don Muang International Airport. New Beers The popular Mill Street Brewery in Toronto’s Distillery District will finally release their long-awaited Barley Wine on Friday, December 17th. Local beer lovers have been waiting patiently for this beer to age a year in the tanks before bottling. England’s Fenland Brewery has two new beers out this month: Rudolph’s Rocket Fuel and the lightly spiced Octagon Ale. Also in England, Ballards Brewery has launched Right Angler, at 9.5% a very potent Christmas brew. 75th St Brewery in Kansas City will launch a new Imperial IPA on New Year’s Eve. In the new year, on January 3rd, Fort Collins micro Odells will release its new 5 Barrel Pale Ale. The brewery has installed a 5 barrel brewing system to create limited edition experiments. The first will be both dry-hopped and run through a hopback, using whole flowers. Ratebeer News is a weekly roundup of the week’s beer news.
