Baron’s Strong Brew (8.8% alc/vol) comes from Singapore, which isn’t a country you really think of when it comes to beer. Baron’s Strong Brew is produced by Asia Pacific Breweries (Heineken), which is most famous for its Tiger Beer brand.

Baron’s has won several significant awards, including the high alcoholic premium beer segment at the Brewing Industry International Awards 1998/1999 and Sial D’or 1998 in Paris plus Silver Medal at the 1998 Australian International Beer Awards.

When you pick it up you aren’t exactly sure what’s inside the well presented brown 640ml bottle with dark green and gold label. It looks very pale through the brown glass but when you read that it’s 8.8% alc/vol you can only imagine what it will taste like.

Baron’s Strong Brew has a fruity and delicate hop note. It is pale gold in colour and the light hop flavour and alcohol have a zingy taste plus a citrusy nearly lime-like character that is wrapped in a slightly sweet malt flavour. In the finish the alcohol is most noticeable as it evaporates off your tongue and creates a cool sensation.

When ice cold, the alcohol and the sharpness of the bubbles are a little harsh on the palate. When it warms a bit the malt flavours fatten out and coat the palate in a much nicer way. Overall a clean, high strength lager that is dangerously easy to drink. Watch out for the ’WHAM’ at the end of the bottle when you stand up.
