A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

Cloudy medium light amber with a thick but quickly receding white head. Aromas of sweet malt with a slight sour tinge. The flavor is very light and there doesn’t seem to be much going on here. A bit of vanilla, baking spice, and light caramel sweetness, but overall somewhat watery. Maybe a bit of grape must. Leaves a slight woody taste behind, but otherwise seems to disappear at the end. Not a bad beer, just not very distinctive.

Deep amber color, big off white head that quickly disappeared. Aroma and taste of malt, spices, yeast and pears. Medium body, average carbonation. Sweet taste with light tartness and surprisingly bitter finish. Nice, fruity Belgian ale.

Bottle from The Bottle Shop, Brugge. Cloudy deeper orange colour with a small creamy head. Strong enough tasting with plenty of smooth pale malts evident in both aroma and taste. There’s a hint of fruit and spice, but not much of either

@ Havregatan 150116. Bottle (750 ml) from Systembolaget. Fruity and yeasty with spicy notes, quite sweet with notes honey, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry, fruity and spicy.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Drank it at mom and dads place. Cloudy orange amber, very big and thick fluffy dirt white head. Nice lacings. Aroma: Sweet apricots, mandarines and apples, toasty doughy bready, vanilla cookie, some yeast, straw and dried grass. Taste: Sweet doughy apricot and grapefruit flavour with white peppers and grass, grapefruit rind. Full bodied, soft carb, smooth texture. Wow. This brewery kills me! They’re so damn good!

Pour hazy orange-amber with a finger of white head. Complex and well-balanced, though I have to admit the lack of spices leaves it not seeming very Christmas-y.
