COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

Pours opaque deep brown with barely present brown highlights, two fingers of fluffy tan head, good retention and excellent lacing. (4/5) Nose is dark roasty malt, dark chocolate, coffee, toasted grain, mild liquorice and vanilla. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Medium to full body, mild carbonation, dry and slightly warming finish. (4/5) A very good stout, and only slightly “American” - the ABV is somewhat higher than most traditional English stouts and there’s a tiny hint of citrusy tartness in the finish, but that’s the extent of its variation from type. I’d like to try it on a nitro tap, though, for some extra smoothness. (16/20)

Pours a nice dark brown, almost Guinness-like though the head doesn’t come close. Had a much more pronounced coffee taste than chocolate...not a bad thing. Left a bit more bitter taste than I wanted, Was actually expecting to rate this higher but 3.5 isn’t a bad score.

Bours black with a fine tan head. Nose is coffee and milk chocolate, a little caramel. Body is heavy and rich. Chocolate cake, coffee, spiced chai, a little burnt toast. Medium to heavy body, surprising given it’s not that heavy a beer. Creamy and viscous mouthfeel. A bigger beer than I expected.

[2/16/15] Draught at Cameron’s Inn in Half Moon Bay. Black with a nice brown head. Nice roasty aroma with dark chocolate and coffee. Bittersweetish roasty flavor with coffee and some dark chocolate. Creamy and slightly watery nitro mouthfeel. Good.

Black body, large, creamy off-white head, soapy lacing. Earth, bittersweet chocolate, light roast, a little bit of chalk. Medium bodied, velvety effervescent on Nitro tap, mild bitterness, semi-dry throughout.

Bottle: Clear, dense, red hue, light head and moderate lace. Lifted fruit, spice, malt, anise, clean, fresh and certainly not excessively roasted. Dry, not sour and moderate bitterness. Palate is clean, only medium weight. Good balance and texture. Flavours are complex with coffee, chocolate, fruit and brown spice. Nice beer but lacks the next level of saturation and mouthfeel that i’m looking for.

10.7.2014. Black beer, quickly disappearing brown head, looks highly carbonated. Oily appearance. Aroma is sweetish, slightly roasted, malty, some chocolate. Lowish carbonation, slightly oily texture. Similar notes than in aroma, plenty of malts, some chocolate, roasty and liquorice which maybe gives the sweetish touch. Slightly bitter finish. Guess this is somewhere between stout and IS but not quite there. Rather simple still but good.

Dark beer with some reddish hues when held against the light. Frothy beige head. Nose of some sweetened coffee, chocolate and toasted grains. This is a very nice, full flavored stout with lots of bitter chocolate and coffee notes, some dark grains and a bit of sweetness with molasses and burnt caramel. The finish has some ash and a bit of coffee bean bitterness. I forgot how much I enjoyed this beer.
