Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy. The beer is bottle-conditioned.

bottle. This was likely the worst beer I’ve ever had. Bought a six pack to try and forced the first one down - second attempt went in the sink drain. Maybe I got a bad batch but this stuff was gross. Aroma was of musty, sweaty socks. Carbonation was similar to a soda pop with big non-uniform bubles that fizzed like a cola. Fell off the palate like inconsistent water. Taste was the worst part - bad, bad and more bad. hints of rubber and that stuff you drink if you have just swallowed some poison.

Bottle->trappist glass: Pours a small, dimishing, off-white head that exhibits spare lacing atop of a cloudy, dark amber body. Aroma is of cookie, herbs, and sweat (yeast); the body is medium, the texture is alcoholic, the carbonation is lively, and the finish is astringent. This beer is also lightly acidic that finishes with a sour milkiness. Not a bad beer, but not one of my favorites.

Nice amber color upon pour with a small head. The smell is very sweet. The beer is a bit mild for a dubbel and the finish is smooth but sweet.

Flying Fish Belgian Style Dubbel ABV: 5% IBU: ? Calories: 150 Volume: 12 fl oz Glass: tulip Purchased at: Sherwood Liquors, Ewing, NJ Price per fl oz: $8 / 72 fl oz = $0.11 per fl oz Consumed on/at: home on March 19th, 2008 sensory first impression: I’ve had this many times at Firkin Tavern on Tap, and enjoyed it as one of the best crafty tap beers there. I enjoy this every time. I realized recently that it’s the beautiful dark mixture of hops coffee and banana that I enjoy so much. It’s nice that it takes it easy on the ABV, too. It’s not a golden monkey style brew - more balanced, more refined, and more easily drinkable than the monkey, though there are times only Victory’s brew will do. Thin head. A beautiful deep red to golden color. Bottle conditioned, yet very clear. A yeasty, hoppy, fruity enjoyment. Aroma/Olfactory: Malt flavor is: coffee and nuts Hop flavor is: resinous, thick and luscious. Very floral, darkly grapefruit citrusy. Yeast flavor is: thoroughly doughy, moldy, and dirty. Other flavors include: alcohol, banana, raisin, vanilla, walnut. Heavy cherry sourness in the aftertaste. Visuals/Appearance: Color is: pale, amber, orange, red and fiery. Darth Maul’s Lightsaber. Liquid is: clear Head and lace are: thin, slightly off white, and lace is very nice. Taste/Flavor: Maltiness or Sweetness level is: heavy Hoppiness or Bitterness level is: medium Sour level is: medium Palate/Tactile: Body or Mouthfeel is: full Texture is: creamy, sticky, thick, tissue paper Carbonation is: average Finish is: long Overall experience: A beautiful and wonderful beer. A fruity joint, with serious dark and sour undertones. This is easily one of my favorite beers, though average in its consumability, price, and availability on tap. A winner all around.
