Editorís note: in 2006, Skinny Dip replaced Loft as the name of New Belgiumís low-alcohol, low-calorie summer seasonal (only minor changes in recipe; i.e. still approximately 4% ABV and spiced with Kaffir lime leaf).

Skinny Dip Description: New Belgiumís Skinny Dip started out as a challenge from our founder Jeff to brewmaster, Peter Bouckaert. Jeff was looking for a full-bodied, highly drinkable beer for after workouts - something a little lighter than the rest of the portfolio. Peter, a Belgian, responded: ďOnly in America would I be asked to brew a beer with no calories and less alcohol.Ē The challenge was to give the beer body and complexity not usually found in beers at the lighter end of the spectrum. The result is Skinny Dip, a full-bodied beer that happens to weigh in at a crisp 114 calories per 12-ounce serving. Cascade hops frolic with a hint of lime leaf, making Skinny Dip a bright, refreshing splash for the summer season.

Loft Description: In a category all its own, Loft delivers an uplifting zest, a taut line of hoppiness, and, from integrated wheat and barley malt, a mouthful as big as the sky. Spiced with Kaffir lime leaves.

I had low expectations of this, based on the last few seasonals that I tried from New Belgium...especially the spring/summer ones. This is actually one of the better ones from them. A blonde ale with a gold-amber appearance. Thought it was a lager....tastes sort of like a pilsner....listed as a blonde ale. Sounds about right. Bottles says brewed with pecan juice which gives it some extra flavor. Reminded me of a lighter version of Lazy Magnolias Southern Pecan. Sampled a single for now, but Iíd get a 12-pack of this in the summer.

Not sure why this is called a Belgian. As a session APA, itís wonderful. A bit watery, but for the low ABV, Iím ok with that.

Bottle. Pours clear gold with white head. Aroma and flavor consist of a clean, neutral malt profile, soft hop bitterness, light fruit notes, and faint yeast esters. Light and clean.

Poured from 12 oz bottle - light golden color with thin white head. Weak citrus notes on nose with mild citrus taste and vague mealtimes. Very simple summer beer.

This smells like a watered-down version of a watered-down, nondescript Belgian ale. It doesnít taste bad, but thatís because it hardly has any taste at all. On the exhale thereís a little hint of something, like maybe I had a Belgian ale several hours ago and noticed something on my own breath when I burped. I will never drink this again.

Light amber with thin white head. Aroma of citrus and spices. Flavor is light, citrusy. Okay for a light.

Bottle; Pour is fairly clear, light / medium gold with a frothy fine bubbled white head into this glass. It retains fairly well here, with sticky lacing presence. The nose is caramel malt and nutty notes, moving to pie crust and and feint spicing. The flavor profile is bittering initial, moving to mineral water, more crust and nuttiness - its almost obnoxious (the malt presence) ,with more of the lime (I guess) - It falls flat for me - the opposite of uplifting - but this wasnt exactly something made for me

pours golden to amber color with a frothy head. the aroma is malt, citrus. the flavor is malty, with some caramel, and lime and grass. very light kinda boring. overall very nice for a light beer for a hot summer but not worth picking up on its own

12oz bottle, enjoyed at robotoperaís lakehouse in MI (why arenít they sending this to OH yet? NB launch is so stingy). Date on the bottle reads 30/nov/14. Clear orange color. Finger and a half of off white head. Leaves good, thicker lace. Medium body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Good light spice, citrus, light herbal aromas. Moderate sweet taste, light spicy, light bitterness. Not a bad belgian session ale.
