shigadeyo (1331), Southwest Ohio Area, Ohio, USA Jan 26, 2007 Well, I got Bent (Bender) earlier, so now it’s time to get Furious...
Surly Furious is a hazy, deep red copper color. It has a thick and creamy gold-colored head with good retention and wavy lacing. Grapefruit, apricot, and pine dominate the aroma with a hint of the deep malty base hiding in the background. The rich, caramel maltiness is quickly washed over by the intense hop bitterness and flavors (pine, resin, grapefruit citrus, even a touch of banana/toffee?). I think this beer actually smells better than it tastes. Don’t get me wrong, the flavor is still really good, but it’s a very slight let down based on the aroma and somewhat typical (not overly unique). Furious is a full bodied beer and is smooth on the palate. There seems to be a lot of visible carbonation, but the bubbles are really small. The resulting mouthfeel is soft and creamy. Overall this is another impressive beer from Surly. It is nicely balanced and not overwhelming (well, maybe just a little for a regular IPA). Actually, I was expecting a little more band since the can said it was almost 100 IBUs! Aggressive, yet under control...
16 oz can (6.2% ABV, 99 IBUs) from buckybeer. Thanks again Mark!
nimbleprop (536), Washington, Washington DC, USA Jul 2, 2008 Scored this in a trade with Scubarex. Many thanks! The tall boy pours a translucent, copper, orange amber with a creamy, slightly beige head that laced the glass heavily. Spicy aroma of pine, lemons and grapefruit. Flavor is well rounded with nice doughy, sweet malts and oranges and lemons. Finish is slightly bitter and dry. Very drinkable. sleestak (18), Williamston, Michigan, USA Jun 28, 2008 Guest brew on tap at Flossmoor Station. Darker golden brown than any IPA I’ve ever seen with an awesome foamy head that left behind lovely lacing. Powerful aroma of floral hops with pleasant citrus notes. Taste was much more malty and sweet than expected, but perfectly balanced by the long, bitter hop finish. Exemplary IPA! stankenk (17), Maplewood, Minnesota, USA Jun 28, 2008 Pours a dark orange. Over powering nose of grapefruit hops. The comes across the palate like is smells with a lot of carbonation. It has an overpowering tart finish. That just makes you beg for more. thedm (3405), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 27, 2008 This draft brew from Durty Nellie’s in Palatine, IL poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized cream colored long lasting bubbles that left behind a transparent uncarbonated dark orange colored body and a good lacing. The aroma was strongly hopped and the mouth feel was tingly from start to finish. The Flavor contained notes of deep floral hops reflected by the aroma. Well done. jstraw (410), Oak Park, Illinois, USA Jun 26, 2008 On tap at Jerry’s. Hazy caramel with big, foamy tan head / Nose of fresh hops and caramel / Light body with pronounced hops over decent malts, and good, sharp finish / Flavors of fresh cut pine, peaches, resin, and caramel / Excellent in a lighter style.
