4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Deep black with caramel colored fizzy head that reduces to a thin lacing. Smells like a malty IPA. The taste is roasted coffee and malts up front and big citrus and bitter right behind that. Lingering malt on the palette. Great beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Lighter aroma. Piney hops. Little roastiness.
Looks nice. very dark. Head is creamy tan.
Taste is very hoppy. Piney. Dull lingering bitterness on the hops is a little off. Not a lot of roasted charachter.
Palate is smooth but the hop finish takes away.
Overall this was surprisingly light but a solid beer. A little too hoppy compared to roasty when looking at the style. Good for a hop head.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft pour at Barley’s. Pours a deep coffee brown with a small beige head that laces the glass. Toasted and roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, earthy hops, a hint of citrus. Right on the money. Really nice. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, roasty mouthfeel. I liked this one a lot.

4oz taster at Rustico in Ballston. A super hoppy black IPA - well done. Enjyoable beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours nearly black - we'll call it black - with a moderately-sized but rich and foamy light tan head. Lots of lacing. Looks like a stout. Aroma is a nice blend of piney hop and chocolate malt. Kind of like roasted hops. Very inviting. The taste amps up these flavors and contrasts. This is like a porter + an IPA (bit more porter). Some astringent citrus and hops and a deep bed of dark roasted coffee malts with a foundational bitterness that seems to come from hops and roasting. Diverse flavors but the balance is off. One of the better black IPA's I've had.

Bottle to glass. About 4 months past enjoy by date. Pours a decidedly black color with a frothy light brown head. Aroma is mostly roasted malts and light burnt coffee bitterness, no hops whatsoever. Hops a bit more apparent in the taste. Lighter in body, perfect for this style. Lingering burnt malt bitterness in the finish. Solid beer, but wish I would have had it fresh to enjoy the true hop character.

Amazing! This coffee tan head and a beautiful black color to it, at first look I’d it’s an oatmeal stout. Smooth citrus bite and a toasty finish.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Deep, dark appearance. Tan, lace head, excellent retention. Roast smell, slightly weak hops don’t come through. Taste is thick, creamy. Hop in flavor, strong mouthfeel.

FROM NOTES: August 23, ’12.
From a 12 ounce bottle into a tulip.
A: Big citrus and pine hop notes. Orange and pineapple are strongest aromas with some faint papaya in there as well. Mild roastiness with notes of molasses and caramel.
A: Pours a deep, dark black with a fluffy nearly two-finger head that faded to leave a TON of sticky side lacing.
T: Follows the nose with black malt and a strong grapefruit/pine hoppiness and an earthy flavor. Astringent roasted malt flavor, some mild dark chocolate, vanilla and coffee notes.
P: Medium body with moderate carbonation.
O: Prototypical black IPA, nothing super special about this one but it is a fine beer all the same.
