September 14th, 2014 - Crooked Stave tastings are a special event, but this one comes courtesy of Perry’s Pizzeria, which has the Bretta Sour on tap. Orthodoxy declares that pizza can only be paired with a light lager, or maybe an IPA, but I wanted to test whether a sour might go nicely with the herbaceous pies being flung around here. The color is a practically iridescent blonde color, and fills the nearby atmosphere with a brettanomyces style aroma with hay (as I write this, tis the season of hay bales and hay rides), banana and a freshness that belongs to a barnyard. The beer delivers its flavors at a low hum, sour and tangy, with some pear on a thinner, more quenching palate. In many ways this tastes a great deal like a Berliner Weisse, but with more funk and acidity, but whatever category or hybridization of categories it falls under, this is good drinking - and pairs well with the pizza.

On draft at The Sovereign. Pours a hazy gold with a massive off white head that slowly withdrew leaving lots of lacing. Lemon aroma. Flavors of chamomile and citrus. Bitter finish.

Kind of a lambic, citrus, tea aroma. Citrus shows up more in the flavor which also has a nice clean tartness.. Good finish.

A nice beer, but nothing that distiguishes it and makes it anything but. Nose is a little off from the taste and just a slight off flavor linger on the back end. Not my favorite thing from them, but nothing terrible either.

Bottle from HF. Pours a slightly hazy light amber with a billowy off white head. Musty but fresh (oddly) brett aroma with some wheat, lemon, oak, some funk, high carbonation and moderate body, slightly bitter and light sourness, some apples and mild citrus on the finish.

Bottle thanks to Chow. Pours a hazy orange gold with medium white creamy head that lasts. The aroma is strong citrus, funk, oak. Thin mouth, similar flavors to nose, earthy, light finish, good.

Bottle; St. Bretta Summer - Pour is cloudy gold - it’s over carbed, with a heavy white head into this glass - it retains fairly well , with some spotting presence here. The nose is sweet breads, citrus rind, and white pepper. The flavor profile reveals initial bready, with funk presence - spent grain, citrus notes, grassy hop presence - finishing off with a certain sharp tartness. It’s nice... for the most part.
