J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Poured a clear dark amber with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is big fruit, roasted malt, alcohol. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a rich red berry fruit, yeast, caramel malt, boozy alcohol light spice palate and a long bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with with fizzy carbonation and a lovely smooth bubbly mouthfeel. Considering the ABV the alcohol is well controlled. There is no alcohol burn, just a nice heart warming finish.

What a beer. Not overwhelmingly malty, a little chocolatey, a touch smokey, wonderful full mouthfeel, not only a great scotch ale but one of the best beers I’ve had, period.

A- Pours a deep ruddy brown hue with a gigantic, chunky head. S- Sweet, grape, vinous notes, hints of brown sugar T- Dark fruit, slight coffee notes, hints of grape. M- Thick with medium carbonation. D- Extremely drinkable. I liked this one more than the BA version even though it was more tame.

Söt inledning men lite torrare avslutning. Riktigt gott.

Ölföreningen. Smak och doft av häxvrål, choklad, hallon, sötlaktris, honung, bränt socker, sirap med toner av fikon och russin. Stor sötma, välbalanserad.

Bottle to giant snifter. Sweet malty aroma with very evident alcohol on the nose. Deep ruby brown with a beautiful bright red highlight in the sun. Tastes malty and sweet with a hint of rich darkness and less booziness than the aroma predicted. Smooth carbonation with just a little bite.

Year old bottle.

Look: Dark, golden pour with huge, thick (small bubbles at start), creamy, light mocha head. Has medium speed retention (small bubbles breaking down into bigger ones and then collapsing), goes down with some sticky lacing, leaves creamy, puffy top layer. The layer leaves some fine lacing when you drink it. It’s clear, deep, dark amber, can barley see through.

Smell: Rich yet smooth and fresh. First association are raisins in sugary scotch. The fruity part is mostly dark fruits, white grapes, plums and some dry fruits like raisins. It creates most of the fresh part. Malt character is also very well developed - burned and brown sugar, honey, molasses, light smoke, milk chocolate and roast. Nothing spikes out, it’s smooth and pleasant. Also some oak and earthy notes to play with the present alcohol, scotch notes. Alcohol/fusel is noticeable, but suits the overall complexity and is not distracting.

Taste: Medium heavy molasses, honey, caramel, chocolate start, continues the same path to full-on molasses with smoke (ash; stronger than in smell) and roast sweetness. Dark, dry fruits, raisins with scotch/rum stick around. Ends with light alcohol/stronger scotch and medium sweetness - that creates medium bitterness with light sour. Also some oak comes out in the after-taste. Lots of caramel and molasses sweetness stays on your lips when time goes on.

Mouthfeel: Full medium heavy, melting carbonation, very creamy and smooth. Light warming of the alcohol at the end, but goes with the overall concept and it should be there.

Overall: Probably one of the best examples of this style, the alcohol notes are present but get a bit annoying only in the taste (that last spike of bitterness). Smell is rich and smooth, could smell it all day, the taste is smooth enough and makes me appreciate the scotch ale style a bit more (not my favourite). The appearance and mouthfeel are superb. A bit of ageing could probably make it even smoother.
