COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it’s meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Always thought Bigfoot was litmus test n this style. This one is way over top with complex deliciousness. Dark fruits some fruity esters along with a good hop presence. Flavors of complex toffee malts caramel hops and some biscuit. Finish is as good as flavor lingering on to a great olfactory sense of all stated before!

Bottle purchased at Friar Tuck (Peoria), about 10 months old. I can smell this beer from 6 feet away. One of the greatest aromas ever. Malt sweetness, honey, raisin, plum, oak, cinnamon/spice, and some booziness. Looks amazing too. Beautiful reddish amber color that you can almost see through. Creamy off-white/tan head that leaves a ton of lacing. Taste is creamy smooth immediately up front, and then it all hits you. Sharp hop bitterness with a decent malt backbone supporting it. I am also getting oak and tobacco. Booze burn at the end, but just enough to not overwhelm the other flavors. Definitely a strong tasting barleywine. Palate is absolutely spot on. So smooth, carbonation is just right - it’s there, but it doesn’t get in the way. Great barleywine; worthy of the rating.

75cl bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Pours dark brown with an amber hue. No head. Aroma is very complex. Dark fruits, charred oak, caramel, earthy notes, malty. Really nice. Taste is mildly sweet. A little bitter. Palate is full. Light carbonation. Very long finish. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. Very complex.

Draft at 2014 Yokohama Beer Fest. Bourbon-ish orange color with a thin, off-white head. Dried fruit, currant, fig with hints of toffee, caramel and praline all on the nose. Tastes more of the same with cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and ginger coming out as it warms up to room temperature. Slightly sweet on the palate at first, then the spices kick in and some bitterness creeps up on the finish. Still a smooth finish however. Solid barley wine.

Bomber to a snifter at home. The freezing rain is keeping me inside on the first day of March... A copper amber color with one finger khaki head and speckled lacing. Toast, sweet toffee, floral notes and some earthy qualities. Complex flavors, well balanced and hides the ABV... Delicious! Halfway through the second glass and my skull is in fact numb ...

Pours a clear copper from the bottle with thin bubbly off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of big caramel malt and vanilla overt dark fruit and earthiness. Taste is nice bitter sweet caramel and toffee. Nice stuff, boozy but not too intense.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2015 Pours a clear copper with a small creamy head that leaves nice lacing. Nose is of caramel, hops and alcohol. American in nature but not abrasive like some of then american barleywines can be. Taste if caramel and toffee with a moderately high bitterness that doesn’t linger for too long. Some dried leaves, tobacco. Alcohol is pretty well hidden for such a big brew. It still dries the mouth and warms a little, though. Body is medium and so is carbonation. A nice one overall, be sure to split that bottle though.

75cl bottle at home. Pours a nice clear amber colour, beige foamy head that didn’t last long. Toffee sweet and tropical fruity hoppy nose. Taste is really complex with toffee and caramel malty sweetness, roasted malty tones too with coffee and chocolate, rich fruity tones with cherries, raspberries, plums and raisins, champagne notes, nice hoppy bitterness, enjoyable bourbon boozy alcoholic warmth. Lingering sweet, boozy and quite bitter finish. Medium carbonation, firm body, oily almost sticky mouthfeel. Big flavours but well balanced.

Floral hop aromas. Soft, creamy mouthfeel of caramel and toffee malt shows tons of floral nuances, dried apricot, honey and banana underneath, and a fresh hoppy backbone. Long finish. Floral style defines it. Weightless texture throughout.
