Commercial Description:
The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

Pitch dark with a thick moka head. Nose of sweet chocolate and plums. Wow! What a great stout it is! Full bodied, with loads of bittersweet chocolate, a bit of roastiness, so creamy, a real dessert. I don’t know if the fact that it was a 2 years old sample is really different than from younger examples, but this was close to nirvana. I prefer by far this one to the péché mortel. On tap at the pub

Probably the best imperial stout available in Quebec but not in bottle, only on tap at DDC on rue Laurier. Less coffee-aggressive than Peche Mortel, so smooth in taste and texture that it is hard to guess that this is a 8,5% ABV (I think it was written 9,5% on the board). Great bitterness in the aftertaste. God, do tap do good to stout!

On tap. Pours oily black with a beautiful cascading dark brown head. Aroma is choclate, espresso, vanilla. Flavor is vanilla, caramel, roast, coffee, chcolate. Palate is full bodied, medium to mild carbonation, finished bitter. Awesome!

DDC Draft. Black body with a tan head. Lots of bitter chocolate, vanilla, carmel sweet taste. Etoh is noticable in a fruit like flavor complementing the chocolate. Real Good. .

(Rating #1960)

Draft @ DDC 10th Anniversary Party. Pours a very dark, chocolate-brown color; creamy, textured medium-brown head with great retention and fine-bubbled lacing; a gorgeous beer. Lots of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, and dry cocoa in the aroma; hidden alcohol; soft, generous nose. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: plenty of roasted nuts, roasted malts, dark chocolate and bitter cocoa; soft edges; creamy, complex, highly roasted and lots of bitter chocolate; very drinkable, nutty, enjoyable imperial stout. Lengthy finish: roasted / charred malts, nuttiness and dark chocolate; nicely dry.

1/18/08 notes: on tap at DdC. Hands down best beer of the night which included Peche Mortel. Features a brown head that doesn’t go away. Flavors include creamy vanilla, nutty, and a little malt sweetness, Perfect balance and thick mouthfeel makes this a real pleasure to drink. This is really something special. I think the vanilla and creamy mouthfeel set this apart. 4/3/09 notes: in bomber at DdC, special 1 1/2 year-aged bottle version. More molasses and chocolate malt in the nose, but body is just as rich and creamy as I remember. I agree with bedainedebiere, this is montreal’s best Impy Stout other than Peche Mortel.
