473ml can pours a pale amber color with a 2 finger off-white head that leaves some thin lacing on the glass. Aroma is slightly nutty with some cereal grains and mild hops. Taste is light malty sweetness with some nutty notes and a moderate bitterness from the hops. Light to medium body with loads of carbonation. Overall, nothing special about this one, just another cheap lager.

Originally rated October 2005. The greyish can is loaded with useless over-rated words, like, Premium Beer and "It is what it is", which seems to be their slogan. I donít know if that works or not, but, what the hell. It pours a golden-amber colour with a medium white head that is composed of many different sized bubbles. Good slick lacing is left. The nose is nutty malts and slight fruit (like peach). Low carbonation mouthfeel. This lager is quite bitter for a cheap swill, with the same nut malt felt in the aroma. The aftertaste is very smooth. This brew is really not as bad as the negative reviews say. Quite a decent Canadian lager.

355ml bottle I bummed from my uncle probably 6 or 7 years ago. I donít remember much about it, notes say it was very run-of-the-mill lager. As one of the buck-a-beers you got what you paid for.

***review from mid 2007***
Bright, clear amber coloured beer. I ended up with a huge off white rocky head with really good retension and ampte large bubble ropy lacing. It has wett malts with some funk, slight alcohol and just smells cheap overall. Tastes ok - If I had to drink more than 2 or 3 Iíd be very bored. There is not much here at all. Mild and weak, so-so cheap malts, slight alcohol, some sourness. Pretty good mouth feel, lots of carbonation. A bit of a dull yet chewy feel, slight sweet after taste. Iím going to slam this odd volumed can back and be done with it.

Bottle (341ml) courtesy of GregClow. As ’Steelback Premium Lager’. Apparently the Steelback products are better now? I hope so as they were pretty dire in the past. Pours a clear gold with a small somewhat-lasting white head. Mild aroma of grain, pale malt, canned corn and some sweetness -- not awesome by any means but not foul like Steelback products of old. Flavour’s the same: grainy with pale malt, corny, some sweetness and even some very faint hops in the finish. Again, nothing awful about the taste which is a definite step-up. Average bodied. If this beer is representative of the whole Steelback line then there’s no question that the products have indeed improved -- so if you’re going for buck-a-beer, you probably won’t get any better then this. For me though, I’ll pass.

[1579-20080810] Tap. Grainy gross toasted yeast aroma. Clear, pale orange body with a quick foamy white bubbly head. Grainy toast flavour also hints at yeast. Light-medium body. Poor.

Re-rating based on version from relaunched Steelback: Golden colour that is darker than most macro lagers, but still on the light side, with a small white head. Aroma of grainy malt, very light toasted note, a moderate sweetness. Thin mouthfeel, fairly low carbonation. Mild flavour of grain and grass, with hops in the finish that are light but noticeable. Very clean and refreshing, this is a simple but well-made mainstream lager.

Old rating based on the original version: It is what it is... the putrid ass-juice of the hounds of Hell. [1/1/1/1/1 - 0.5]

Bottle, part of the re-launch of 5 Steelback beers under new ownership. Light yellow (maybe lighter than the Light Lager??), very small white head, some streaming bubbles. Soapy, grainy aroma, quite mild. Taste has a little more flavour than the light - somewhat sweet and lightly hopped. Mouthfeel is medium for the style and not nearly as carbonated as the light. This is not something I would reach for every again - there is simply not enough flavour here - but it is better than a macro lager and it is clean and not off-putting.

Not worst macro lager I have had, but nicely designed macro marketing bottle. Pale yellow with neutral aroma, and somewhat astringent but not too thin body.
