Bottle from recent trade. Hand labeled 9/22/07. So 7 years old I guess. Murky brown pour with a small head with big bubbles that fade to a messy ring. Great aromas of berries, figs, dark bread, almonds, chocolate, and banana. Tastes sweet but not really rich. More dry and boozy. Big fig and dark bread taste with some chocolate, nuts, licorice, raisins, berries, and wood. Medium body. Complex Belgian beer but Iíve had others Iíve enjoyed more and are much easier to get. I might like to try a fresher one some day though.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy ruby chestnut, with a moderate off-white head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Port, berry compote, plum notes and sweet spices make for an appealing aroma. Mild sweet fruit hops up front soon give way to spiced fruits and dark plum notes in the mid-palate. Berry notes lead into smooth port in the finish, and there is a lingering sweetly spicy aftertaste. This really is a very good beer, richly flavoursome and highly enjoyable.

BMMillsy (1391) - Florida, USA - SEP 23, 2014
Bottle purchased in Bruges and poured safely back home in Florida. Pours murky dark brownish purple with a massive light khaki head that sticks around. Aroma is dry funky barnyard yeast, surprisingly grassy, light spices, with low sweetness on the nose but for some raisins and figs. Flavor begins with a punch of sweet figs and pears and raisins balanced by a crisp grassy hop finish. Plenty of dry barnyard funk here from the yeast. Medium bodied but lightened up considerably by the high carbonation, crisp, with a dry finish. Definitely lighter than its 12 counterpart. Overall a very nice brew but maybe not quite living up to the considerable price tag. Worth trying, but donít kill yourself over it.

Bottle picked up in Brussels a couple of years ago. Itís very difficult not to give this beer a high score. Itís just wonderful. The aroma is deeply rich, nutty and earthy. Flavor is just about the right amount of sweetness (molasses) maltiness and rich blend of earthy flavors. I cannot recommend enough

When opening some bottles of them, I didnít really discover a sweeping smell, but for the rest everything perfect. Bought two crates of them a few months a go. They stayed in my basement for three months on a permanent temperature of 10-14 įC. I know this beer will further evoluete to a gorgeous and fascinating beer. Probably not that monument that itís big brother, the Westvleteren XII, has reached in the world, but still expecting a lot from this beer.

Bottle shared with Holmen1 on board Fridtjofen 08.09.14. Unclear brown. Dense and persistent beige head and lacing. Aroma of nuts, dried berries, figs, leather and freshly baked brown bread. Similar taste, also with almonds, dark caramel and prunes. Very complex and superbly well-balanced. High carbonation. Bitterness and dried berries coming through in aftertaste. A beer with personality!

Holmen1 (2494) - Stavanger, NORWAY - SEP 8, 2014
Flaske kjÝpt i 2012, delt med skibsrederen ombord pŚ Fridtjofen: lyst beige skum med liv. Lett uklar brunfarge. Uhyre kompleks aroma av tÝrkede bśr, fiken, sviskeplommer, litt lśr og krydder. Smaken er en ren intensivering av alt dette, og varmen stiger umiddelbart til topplokket. Et eksepsjonelt Ýl med avrundet eleganse og stor personlighet.

Alengrin (1801) - BELGIUM - SEP 5, 2014
The blue cap in the holy trinity of Westvleteren, equally hard to get as the legendary 12 or the Blond. Medium thick, creamy, light beige head, opening after a while leaving íislandsí of foam throughout the surface of the Westvleteren chalice as well as a steady rim. Colour a beautiful dark mahogany, slightly hazy and perfectly fit for the autumn days that are coming. Aroma clearly less powerful than in the 12, but almost as elegant and refined, revealing hints of cocoa powder, candied dates, raisins, banana, cloves, liquorice, gingerbread, cinnamon, grapefruit peel, medium dry sherry, pear... But everything in a subtle and noble way, delightfully blended into each other. Taste kicks off with candied fruits and old-fashioned Flemish caramel candy, clearly less sweet than the 12 with less presence of candi sugar, dryish with medium carbo tingling on the tongue and a supple, smooth mouthfeel, all built on a relatively light nutty maltiness, spicy yeastiness and a rather powerful, peppery, leafy and aromatic hop bitterness setting in already before the finish and assuring a long, dry, satisfying finish, yet becoming sweeter as it warms up. More lean, significantly dryer and lighter on the tongue than the opulent 12, but equal in elegance and finesse. Had the monks at Sint-Sixtus not added more hoppiness to the 12 and left it as cloyingly sweet as it was back in the eighties, this lesser God of Belgian top fermentation would have stood a big chance of having been rated higher, since it was more balanced in those days. Compare with Rochefort 8 versus Rochefort 10... Anyway, itís been some years since I had this, thanks to Jan for bringing me a sixpack back from De Vrede. Iíll keep a few in the cellar for a couple of years to see how they mature.

Zymurgeist2 (1030) - Redwood City, California, USA - SEP 4, 2014
Bottle at Cambrinus in Brugge. Moderate dark fruit and moderate high bread dough aroma. Hazy copper-brown with a light tan head that dissipated early, but lingered as it warmed. Taste is rich malt, chocolate and restrained noble hops. Finishes bone dry.
