slitcher (88), Freeport, Illinois, USA Oct 31, 2009 Pours a redish brown with a very thin head. Slight aromas of chocolate and brown sugar. Watered down flavor and a very thin body. Not good at all. joet (1699), Fulton, California, USA Oct 30, 2009 aromas of sherry and wet cardboard mingle with better roasty cocoa aromas. the oxidized malts are more present on the tongue. slightly spritzy. overall: not recommended. SHANER4 (370), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Oct 19, 2009 bottle 12oz. - Pored dark brown with thin tan head that faded quickly.
Aroma - roasted chocolate malt and mild coffee scent.
Flavor - Mild chocolate and hazelnut taste. Boring and pretty much what I expected from AB.
Palate - Light/medium bodied beer with below average carbonation. Has roasted malt finish with little aftertaste.
Overall - Drinkable porter with not alot going on. Its ok for any yuppie thinking they’re cool because they are drinking a dark beer, but to any real dark beer drinker this is just subpar!!!! RHeastings (380), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 12, 2009 Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours the expected deep brown color with a light tan head. Aromas of roasted malt come through in the nose; to a lesser extent than such classics as Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, but still respectable. There was also a slight medium crystal malt character. The palate shows more roasted character, along with some balancing bitterness. Overall, an unflawed, but unexciting porter. Onslow (174), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA Oct 10, 2009 A dark pour from 12 oz bottle. Dark. Very dark. Listening closely I hear wheezy breathing and the sounds of machines… A deep voice whispers. “Onslow… Come to the DARK SIDE…” Criminy, all wanted was a beer that didn’t suck. I didn’t think I was putting myself at risk of becoming some macro-brew zombie, wandering the earth the eat the flesh of the pure, true, elect and golden micro brew swillers….
Ok - got that out of my system - pleasant dark brew. Aroma of toasted malt. Sweet and toasted malts (both) at the start of the swallow, slightly sweet, a reasonable smack of hoppy bitterness on the back of the end at the very end of the swallow, modulated by the somewhat sweet malts. Not bad. Not distinctive for a porter. The way I see it, though, is that I can pull into almost any backwater gas station C-Store and walk out with this or some other Michelob product. They may not be the best of the genre but at least you can walk out of the store with something that does not suck.
Hopper (277), San Antonio, Texas, USA Oct 7, 2009 A dark brown beer with a small head. The aroma has a hint of roastiness. The taste has some slight roasty flavors that finishes watery-too watery. I thought this wouldn’t be bad since I like porters but was disappointed with the watery flavors. Once again I do not get it with these fakers - I do not mean to cut down on someone but what are these peoples problem. Drinking these bad bland beers that lack any flavor profile makes me sick. I know it is about making money & not making good quality beers. You would think they could make great beers with all their money & brewmasters. This is just another example that goes to show that you cannot buy heart, creativity, or passion to make great beer unless some top notch brewmaster decides to sell his soul to the DARK SIDE. And that wouldn’t do it either because you could not convince the bigs in the suits. presario (2953), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Oct 6, 2009 GABF Michelob lunch. Went well with the desert! Dark amber. Light aroma. Light flavour of burnt coffee and chocolate. Light and thin but drinkable. Snot19kilo (81), Oakwood, Illinois, USA Oct 6, 2009 12oz bottle Pours brown/red with a small tan head. lace lingers after the head is gone. Aroma is heavy on the roasted grains and light on the chocolate and coffee.
Flavor is roasted and earthy grains. nuts, caramel and metallic. Finish was light and very carbonated.
One of Michelob’s better brews.
