2011 bottle. Black pour, brown head. Nose is ash, cherry, berries, roasted malts. Taste is raspberry jam, ash, dark chocolate, lingering bitterness.. Viscousy, surupy mouthfeel.

Bouteille 22oz, courtoisie de Hogtownharry ou Blankboy. de couleur noire et opaque. Nez de malt rôti (notes brûlées), de chocolat noir, de houblon résineux et légèrement citrique, léger d’alcool avec des traces de mélasse, de fruits et de café. Plutôt ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-doux ainsi qu’une texture riche, légèrement crémeuse avec des petites notes huileuses. Goût amer de houblon moyennement résineux et légèrement citrique (une amertume qui dure toute la gorgée) avec de faibles notes fruitées fruitées et épicées lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute rapidement un goût malté rôti aux notes brûlées et terreuses avec un moyen goût de chocolat noir ainsi qu’avec un léger goût de café ainsi que des notes de mélasse sucrée puis en finale, l’amertume de houblon s’intensifie en affichant un caractère plus résineux et légèrement herbeux jusqu’en finale où est elle est également appuyée par un léger goût d,alcool ainsi que quelques notes de noix. Post-goût long et un peu sec, amer de houblon résineux, légèrement citrique et herbeux avec un goût de malt rôti, léger de chocolat et d’alcool avec des traces de café. (2006)

UPDATED: MAR 31, 2013 2010 vintage. Pours black with a ring of tan foam. Aroma is toasted malt, hops, oak, and light booze. Taste is oak, chocolate malts, and earthy hops with a touch of charcoal. Aroma and taste are reminiscent of a musty book, but a book such as an original moby dick. Classic and refined. Smooth and oaky mouth feel.

2008 bomber rec’d in trade from phatdog; HUUUGE thanks for finding and sending to me, Craig!! Aroma has too much bourbon/ alcohol for me - there is plenty of roasted malt in there also and maybe dark fruit?. Black pour with beige/espresso foam. Taste definitely still has the warming alcohol and plenty of roasted flavors + slight coffee. palate is a wonderful 5 due to a perfect oily, slick, and soft carbonation; velvet baby! Glad I got to try this and will try to find another...

2011 vintage bottle pour into snifter..mostly black..leaves slight dark brown heady film on top..slight carbonation as expected..nose of vanilla..malt..chocolate..anise..licorice..very nice..mouthfeel is great..not harsh and coats palate..impressed by smooth, full mouthfeel with definite roasty burnt notes in a good way..just enough abv presence to warm you up..very solid ris and one of the better offerings I have had from smuttynose..worth seeking out..

bottle shared with VT and friends. black pour, nice crema head, little retention. tons of roastiness, coconut, bourbon, fully dry-hopped with big and bold american hops, smoky. average to soft carbonation, full body - velvety, medium long citrusy-lightly piney finish. solid impy.

600 ml bottle from czar, shared with czar and friends. A pitch black ale with a short lasting beige head. Smell is roast, coffee, burnt toast, mocha, vanilla. Taste is coffee, chocolate, roast, burnt, vanilla. Finish is dark coffee, black chocolate, a bit dry. Maybe a touch of salt. Citrus (lemon and grapefruit) in there, too. Body is average, mouthfeel is thick, velvety and oily. Weak carbonation. Excellent Imperial Stout!

Black pour with medium frothy chocolate milky head. Nose is roasted malts and faint hoppiness. Dry and chocolately throughout. hint of licorice? resiny hops buried underneath. a Full creamy body. Clean bitter finish.

Draft to taster. Looks good; black with mocha lacing. Smells and tastes solid; sweet and malty with a nice, viscous mouthfeel. Nice.

On tap at Akkurat, September 2012. Vintage 2008. Black with a small tan head. Quite heavy with dark chocolate, licorice and dark fruit. A perfect beer to sip.
