COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“the ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“ The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Flavor outpaces the aroma, though its really not anything to complain about. Flavors are unbelievable... Lot of chocolate. Sweet cocoa flavor with a slightly bitter finish. Not sure I could drink much of it given its richness, but what a wonderful beer overall.

Bottle at Dans, courtesy of Aaron. Thanks man! Poured pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma is crazy chocolate, dark chocolate, and coffee. Smell is amazing, smells like liquid chocolate syrup, WOW. Taste follows, with tastes of huge chocolate, coffee, and hints of vanilla. Would never have thought this beer was 11% ABV, but damn it is smooth. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, with medium carbonation. Overall, a fine stout and reminds me of a melted Hershey’s bar. Delicious.

Oily, black with brown head. It´s quite sticky. As it´s name says it is pure chocolate, with some caffe notes. Taste is sweet, also mainly chocolate with some torrefact notes.

This is great as long as you love chocolate. Smooth but delicious. Highly recommend this to anyone who says they don't like dark beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours coffee black with a thin brown head that disappeared quick. Aromas of guess what, chocolate, large amounts of chocolate. Actually smells like hershey’s chocolate syrup without much other detectable to me than just that. Taste has a little bit more complexity than the aroma, with some vanilla hiding in there but still chocolate reigns supreme. Not a bad offering considering I enjoy chocolate on occasion, but I would almost consider this overkill. The alcohol is covered fairly well and it doesn’t have a watery mouthfeel, but it still doesn’t change the fact that this is like melting a hershey’s chocolate bar, chilling it, drinking it, and catching a buzz that is not sugar related. But after saying all that, it’s not a bad beer, just one dimensional and nowhere near a great imperial stout.

On tap at Cask P&K, London. Pours a deep brown, almost black colour with a small light brown head. Quikly vanishing foam. Aroma is chocolate upfront, with cocoa powder, milk and vanilla. Taste is sweetish and similar to the aroma with only a touch of roasted bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to full with. Good carbonation. Overall, this is just too simmilar to chocolate milk to deserve a really high score from me, but it’s honestlt good and enjoyable.

22 ounce bottle, poured a black color. Aromas of milk chocolate, toffee, roasted malt, some vanilla, and fudge. Flavors are the same, the booziness is sneaky with this one, didn’t taste like an 11% beer should. Real enjoyable beer overall.

650 ml bottle courtesy of Jonas (non-RB). Pours black with a very small mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace. Smell is sweet with milk chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, toffee and hints of orange zest and pine. Taste is sweet and tiny metallic with dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, fudge, burnt caramel, grass, orange peal, alcohol and hints of sweet liquorice. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, silky and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with dark chocolate, burnt caramel, orange peal, pine and alcohol.

(1pt, 6oz bottle) Dark brown to black body with a small brown head. Aroma is is strong with bittersweet chocolate, and not much else but a hint of alcohol underneath. Flavor is sweet, strong chocolate notes, vanilla, just a bit of lactic acid, too. Like a made from scratch hot chocolate. Alcohol is also present and warming. I’d love to drink this around a camp fire or in a mountain cabin on a cold night. Body is on the medium side of full, creamy texture. Wonderful chocolate flavor, but might get dinged a couple points for being almost too chocolately. Still delicious, though.

Originally reviewed: 7/17/09. Poured into my snifter a deep thick black with a very thin tan head on top. No lacing at all. Smells like marshmallows, Hershey’s syrup, honey, coffee liqueur, and almonds. Very nice! The mouth on this is thick and slightly syrupy with a dry, chalky finish. If I sip this right away out of the fridge, it is a big boozy syrupy mess. I would definitely recommend waiting ’til this warms up a bit. As it warms the chocolate flavors come to the forefront. Nice roasted aftertaste, and slightly sweet finish. This is good, but the alcohol is a bit too high for my pleasure. Rogue’s Choco Stout is better, as the ABV is about half of this. I drank half the bottle of this and my wife and I used the rest to pour over a tall glass of vanilla frozen custard. Dang! Glad we did that. This was a very pleasant treat that made the night all the more enjoyable. Recommend.
