Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins.

9% ABV- Has a sharp alcohol bite. Heavy on the chocolate malts with some other stuff going on. Jet black appearance with just a very slim mocha head. First sampled almost exactly 4 years ago. Both bottles were aged going on 1.5 years, so thinking this would do better after 3 or so.

PINT tasting @ Moortgat. Black/ruby clear, light brown lacing foam. Coffee tones in aroma. Bitter taste with fruity tones, but not overwhelming. Just nice. (Arnhem 201511)

355 ml, bottled Jan. 2015, from Ammersin Centerstore.
Pitch black body, with a quite small, fluffy, coffee, colored head.
Aroma of melting dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice, dark and dried fruits, tobacco, nuts, dark bread.
Taste starts sweet, with dark chocolate, dark fruits, black tea, some dark bread and merges into a smooth, dry roastiness, with coffee, wood, liquorice, tobacco, cocoa powder.
Full, creamy mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes smooth, dry, roasty, medium bitter, with coffee, liquorice, tobacco, some wood, some cocoa, some alcohol warmth.

Delicious! Stunning that this is a bottom fermented Porter, big and complex as an Imperial Porter. Very smooth to drink, with a pleasant subtle warmth and wonderful, manifold dark malts. Clearly the best Baltic Porter I’ve had so far.

Flavour: coffee with alcohol, burned sourness, some berries. Rich and good balanced, burned and warming. Very good.

Bottle from The Wine Emporium 301015. Another good beer from Smuttynose. Intense looking thick black with a layer of latte coloured foam. Oak, vanilla and toffee make for a smooth rich flavour.
