COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

This is an inky black beer that pours without any sort of head. It has sweet red fruit, whisky, vanilla, currant, chocolate and leather flavours with a creamy sarsaparilla and warming earthy finish.

33 cl bottle. Pours black like its name would suggest. Thin tan head that dissipated fairly quickly. Excellent Aroma of chocolate, raisins, some coffee, smoke, wood. Taste is differs, vanilla, chocolate, and whiskey. thin body, quite smooth.

Black pour no head. Smokey scotch aromas with notes of dark fruit. Flavor is similar with notes of brown sugar and oak as well. Pretty tasty brew. It wasn’t as robust as I thought it would be but it;s very drinkable as is.

Bottle pour. Very dark with no head. Boozy aroma with plums and raisins. Initially sweet flavor with a strong smokey finish. A little coffee as well on the flavor. Long lasting smokey flavor. Very nicely done.

Harviestoun Ola Dubh is very thin, warming, with no head. All signs of a high ABV. Taste leather, rauchbier smoke, cherry, cocoa, finishes with wood, and a certain sourness. NOT citrus, more tanic. The Aroma steals the show with this beer as I can really enjoy the interplay between all the sweeter characteristics. Aroma is anis, rauchbier smokey, fleeting ginger, cherry and as it opens dark fruit, cocoa. Although the finish will have fans of tanic notes and dry wood think they died and gone to heaven the wonderful play between the dark fruit, cocoa and smokiness that makes the aroma so wonderful is short lived and lost in the finish. This would be a perfect gift for Christmas for a Beer loving friend, as it is a real winter warmer and too dear to not be drank not on a special occasion.

Poured from a bottle shared in Avon North Carolina; it is a dark brown with no head. It has the aroma of Bourbon and the taste of sweet smokey Bourbon with a coffee after taste.

Had these in a flight of Old engine oil, 12,16,30,40. This one is by far my favorite of the bunch. i found that the peat and smoke were bigger here and on the palate i found this one had more tannins than expected. These beers aged beautifully.
