cgarvieuk (2302), Edinburgh, Scotland Aug 20, 2008 Bottle at Chris o’s…deep black, strong hoppy nose, rich roast malts , quite hoppy, little treacle, just not working for me BeerBiker (1159), Odense, Denmark Aug 14, 2008 [Sampled at DØE-festival with Helga, Søren and Anne, Århus 2008.] Deep black and beige head. Notes of roast, coffee, chocs, vanilla, wood and with a long nice bitter finish. Wellbalanced. Just great! Veer (328), Landskrona, Sweden Aug 10, 2008 Aroma: absolutely marvellous. Fresh hops. Sourish malt. Deeply roasted but not burnt. Roasted & non-malted grains. Lovely. Hops are on the American, citrusy side. Appearant oak... slightly vanilla... This is nearly divine. Vague presence of coffee & dried fruits such as figs... Very sourish.
Flavour: fruity, cocoa-bitterness, heavily of dark malt. Bitter malty-fruity & hoppy aftertaste. Some apple peel & fine dark chocolate. Splendid! It’s not very sweet - definitely on the drier side. Fiery yet laidback, rustic, old. Not artsy fartsy , not cloying. The oak presence is quite subtle and does well in this delicately balanced brew. Undertones of yeast. The hops have a very special role, adding to the halfdry fruityness. Notes of grapes, grapefruit & prhaps even some elderblossom. Sour apple.
But this is no light, refreshingly fruity beer. It’s near impenetrable black, only with a brown rind when lit from behind. The foam is a sombre greyish brown hue, consisting of fine, fine bubbles rendering a quite smooth, thick film, which, judging by the gaps, is nearly elastic.
The palate is sandy - dry. Noble. Fluffy & rustic, like a fine English strong ale. Nice fizz, quite still yet perfectly adequate. oh6gdx (5739), Vaasa, Finland Aug 7, 2008 Bottled. Very deep black opaque colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, quite strong oak and also alcohol among with licorice. Flavour is smoky wood, alcohol, mild sourness, licorice and also some oak. Rather wellbalanced and a big beer. Fin (2164), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Aug 6, 2008 Had this at Chris O’s pre GBBF tasting, 02-08-08 cheers for a wonderful day Chris Pours dark brown virtually black in colour. Nice hoppiness on nose little bit of liqourice sits in the background. Good hoppy bite, nice lemony tang courses though the dark roasted malts, some vanilla from the oak ageing, this is a really ineresting beer.
