Description:
History of the Beer Style
This is a unique beer style so there is no history. Rye is used in brewing as a substitute for malted barley. It gives a very distinctive aroma and flavor to the beer. The flavor is proportional to the amount of rye used in the recipe. Honey is usually used in brewing to give a drier finish and more alcohol. There is usually minimal flavor impact from the honey as well. Rye is used to give the distinctive flavor and aroma, but we used a special honey that added some aroma and sweetness to the beer.

The Abita Selection: Honey Rye Ale
Abita Honey Rye Ale is made with pale, wheat and rye malts. It also has a blend of four different caramel malts. We used 20% rye malt to give the beer a very good rye flavor and aroma. The extra rye also gives a fuller mouthfeel to the beer. We added a generous amount of wildflower honey as well. This gives the beer a sweet aroma and flavor. Willamette hops are used, but the beer is not very bitter and has very little hop aroma. This allows the flavors of the rye and honey to come through. The result is a full-bodied, sweet and malty beer.

Food Pairings
Abita Honey Rye Ale is very versatile and complements a number of dishes quite well. For starters, it can go well with a plate of select nuts, cheeses and breads. It pairs well with almost all red meats, and is mild enough not to overpower all seafood dishes. It is excellent with New Orleans favorites such as trout meuniere and trout amandine. It also complements almost any barbecued dish.
