Based upon a historical recipe for Victorian stout, this beer has a deep, rich history. The grain bill is equal parts Maris Otter and Golden Promise malts assisted by judicious amounts amber, brown and black malts. Hopped sparingly with East Kent Golding hops it has a slight bitter finish. The aroma of dark semi-sweet chocolate and a hint of coffee persist from the aroma through to the firm, full mouthfeel of this smooth and rich beer. This beer belies the substantial alcohol it delivers and it is, perhaps, too easy to drink. Who knew that 160 years ago English pubs served such a beer?
