Apologies if this has been covered many times in the past. I tried searching the forum but didnít have any luck.

Anybody here been over to Westvleteren to buy beer directly from the abbey before? Iíll be over that way in September and figure I might as well pick some up if thereís a chance to do so.

I canít for the life of me work out the rota thing on their site:

http://www.sintsixtus.be/eng/brouwerijactueel.htm

What is it trying to tell me? Phone up at the specified time for the specified beer, fine ... but then when are you able to pick that beer up? Do they just give you a slot totally at random? If so, is there a rough rule of thumb about how far into the future that slot will be? Is the slot time specific or can you show up at any time in the given window?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Mark, Iíve done this a few times now. It works as you describe and the schedule you linked does have some clues, so the slots theyíre taking phone reservations for on 23rd/24th (left column) will be the ones for w/c 29th (right column). When you get through (good luck!) youíll be given an allocated slot. If you explain youíre coming from afar, there is a bit of negotiation to be had here but not a great deal.

One thing you are able to do though, even without reservation, is to queue up in your car at the start of a pick up window and buy 2x mixed three packs per person. They have a limited number of those for each collection window.

Sometimes the cafe also has beer to sell in the shop on the left as you walk in, so if you manage to get your three packs and the beer from the shop (they also limit the numbers there) itís possible to leave with a decent haul even if you have no luck on the phone lines.

Finally, last time we were there they were selling the 6 packs of Westy 12 with the two glasses (the ones they exported) also from the drive-up at 25 euro each. Limit was one per person and no reservation was needed.

If you get to the Cafe early enough you should be able to pick up a six pack per person for twenty Euros then look in utter amazement at the price the beer shop just off if the main square in Brugge attempts to prise out of tourists for the same gift pack, shall we start the bidding at Ä40, Ä45?, Ä50? nope keep going north sir, Ä55?,Ä60, Ä65 nope. they charge a whopping Ä72 for the same pack, staggering! And I bet they shift some as well.

I have done the pick up via car, but its a palaver I think that now I am more inclined to go to cafe and get some.

Is it me or has it become too commercialised? I remember when it was cheap.

Excellent ... that helps a lot. Thanks for that chaps. Turns out the weekend Iíll be there is the bloody annual week holiday when both the cafe and the abbey shut down. (September). What are the chances of that!

Thinking about doing a different weekend now and just heading to the cafe. That way if the pickup at the abbey works out, then fine, but if I donít get through, whatever.

Only been once and bought some at the shop (on the left as you walk in the cafe, as already mentioned). You can also buy a glass full (open bottle) in the cafe of course.

The only option for buying was a four pack and glass set, if you wanted a 12: the gift set containing only one 12: these guys arenít daft! The other two brews were available in singles: max 6 bottles.
