I’m on a business trip to Northern Virginia from my Seattle home this week, and I feel sorry for you East Coasters. The only retail shop near my hotel is 7-11, and the best offering they have is Dominion Lager, which I’d say is pretty darn mediocre. In Seattle, there are at least 5-10 good beers available, including things like Mirror Pond Pale Ale, various Pyramid offerings and other quality, if unspectacular selections. How do you live in this wasteland? The East Coast is a good 10 years behind the West in getting up to speed on good beer.

You can’t judge an entire section of the country just based on the shit area you’re in now.

God I though this topic would never come up again...

You’re just unlucky in terms of bottle shops I guess, there are dozens of great stores in NY, PA, New England and Quebec selling such "behind the times" stuff as:

ALLAGASH
SOUTHAMPTON
MCNEILLS
DIEU DU CIEL (ok only that silly coffee imperial stout..)
VICTORY
DOGFISH HEAD
DOMINION (yes, they make some good beer, not just that lager)
THOMAS HOOKER

well that should be enough. I guess if your 7-11s out there sell Alesmith and Pizza Port, you’ve got something to complain about, otherwise...

In addition: That would be like me saying "God Belgian beer sure sucks ass" after only drinking Stella Artois

I’m not blaming the entire East Coast for being lame. I appreciate Dogfish Head, Ommegang, even Samuel Adams to some degree. I’m just saying it’s indicative of a general lack of availability here compared to the Seattle area. I’m also not claiming 7-11 to be the spot where one should go to find good beer--again, it’s just indicative of a larger trend that good beer is much more easily available on the West Coast.

Well, there are just gonna be areas that don’t have good beer. I live in one. I have a minimum of a 20 minute drive just to get to anything resembling a decent micro. There are plenty areas like that out West, too. You just don’t live in one. Just be thankful your business trip wasn’t in the deep South...

Try actually venturing more than 3 miles from your hotel. The East Coast has some of the greatest offerings of beer on the planet that are easily on par with the best West Coast offerings out there.
