am making my plans for a London visit in late November, and I am tempted to make a day trip to the Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival in Cardiff on the 25th. Has anyone been to this event in recent years? Does anyone else plan to go there? Or would anyone say it’s not worth the trip?

I was there in 1999. They had quite a few cask ales and ciders. Cannot remember exactly, but it was probably 70 or 80. It was worth going, but then again, I was in Cardiff anyway.

Probably won’t be going to Cardiff, but I will be in London on business 28-29 November if you want to meet up in London?

Yes, I’d like that. Fellow Norwegian RateBeerian Larsga will be in town, too.

I should be around in London. I could be tempted by a trip to Cardiff but the cheap train tickets involve travelling at rather inconvenient times.

It used to be superb - I went from 1991 until 2000 - but now it’s moved and, so I’m told, isn’t as good as it used to be. Still, there should be over 100 beers with a lot of Welsh ones and if "Uncle Knobby" Brian Francis still does the beer order then there will be a lot of rare ones too. A list usually appears beforehand on scoopgen, I’ll ask Brian if I see him beforehand.

Still toying with the idea of going, but I’ll probably make the decision very close to (or on) the day as the times of trains for which cheap advance tickets from London are available are restricted. Also, the last sensible train to get back is the 1925 (cheap tickets NOT available) - the later "fast" train is not so fast as you have to switch to a bus at Reading (engineering works presumably).

I got a 09:45 train from Paddington and a return at 18:25. £ 33 total, which isn’t that bad.

Guess you got in early as the cheapest tickets currently available are £21.50 outward, but not valid on the 0945, and £16 back. If I come, I’ll probably just get a return on the day for £54.

I went, and had a good time. Lots of fine ales, friendly natives. There will be a report on my blog!
