I’ve never been round the pubs in St Albans and as Camra claims that it is the best beer drinking town in the country, I thought I should try them out.
Apart from the Lower Red Lion, which pubs should I go to?

Ian, our route last year, which we all enjoyed was :
1) The Boot, 4 Market Place, a good place to get a snack and a decent selection of 5 beers before the rigours ahead, you can eat inside the pub or one of the stalls in the market outside.
2) The farriers Arms, 35 Lower Dagnall st. It’s a very good McMullens pub, lovely and sunlit on a lunchtime and always carries the McMullens seasonal.
3) The Lower Red Lion, 34 Fishpool St. Absolute cracker, stay there a while, it is also another good place to eat if you haven’t done so. We preffered the bar to the left as you enter.
4) We did then do the big hike across to The Farmers Boy, 134 London Rd. to get some fresh air and it has to be done at some time. This is The Alehouse brewery & Tap. We thought it was very good.
5) We then went to The White Lion, 91 Sopwell Lane, average, but got a Rating
6) Then on to The White Hart 4 Keyfield St. just around the corner, also average.
7) The Goat Inn, 37 Sopwell lane was excellent, beautiful old Inn with lots of wooden panels
8) Close by is The Garibaldi, 61 Albert St. Its a Fullers, but is a pleasant building.
9) Finally we ended up at The Mermaid, don’t know where or how, but decent beer.
Top 3 I would say were the Lower Red Lion, The Farmers Boy and The Goat, but the others all had something going for them.
Enjoy

It is certainly not the best drinking town in the country, but it is pretty good. I think Glen has covered everything in his post though.
Have fun. (You could always come to Leicester, and do the German fest at The Swan & Rushes with me and Simon)

They’re talking through their arses - or, more likely, the useless gits have never drunk anywhere decent.
Saying that, it’s a decent enough crawl and I did it a month or so back when I was working there; have a look at the rambling gibberish I wrote and it includes addresses too - there’s a bit of walking! I can knock you up a quick map if you want.
I used to live in St Albans for 5 years so know the pubs well and have to admit it’s better now than it was in 2001...

Thanks to Glen and Gazza for your suggestions. I will try to do as many as I can. The information from the contributors on this site is as good as ever.
Mark, thanks for the offer of Leicester, but it would have to be a daytrip for me as Le Tour de France passes my front door on Sunday and I really want to see it. When I eventually come up to the midlands, I would like a bit more time to explore the pubs there. Enjoy the German sesh though, it sounds like a good event.
I will give some feedback on my St Albans pub crawl on Monday.
Thanks again
Ian

Gazza, before I die I must accompany you on a pub crawl in one of these mythical northern meccas of beer drinking you talk about!
There was me thinking the north was all lager, keg bitter and sparklerised pisswater!

Name the place, London-boy !!!
Seriously, when Sheffield gets back on it’s feet I’ll happily show you around. Maybe a few months’ time?

Why is Sheffield not on its feet?

Coz it’s feet are still under several feet of flood water from last week
