About RateBeer: History|
A Brief History Of RateBeer
We'd need to talk to Bill about getting a proper history. Aside from the founders, I basically came along as the first member-administrator, because I was harrassing Bill so much with corrections. Things were really a mess back then. We're finally down to the last giant mess but even that will be sorted out soon enough.
Ramsdell followed me over from the Manifesto and proved more anal than I was about accuracy, so he got involved administrating as well. His role solidified into something tangible whereas mine was kept vague so I could just do whatever needed doing.
The next step was Joe coming on board to build the site into what it is today. Someone posted the original Ratebeer layout a while back and that was cool. Brought back memories for us veterans. New guys who didn't see the old layout might wonder how we ever managed to do anything. To find a beer you used to have to search all the beers that began with that letter. (This is where the brewery name in front thing came about, to make things easier). After a while this was too cumbersome but the complete layout overhaul by user_ex straightened out a lot of these issues.
Bill left the site in Joe's hands shortly thereafter (Wade having left the party shortly after inception).
Volgon came on as newsletter writer, Mr Dick as a pinch-hitter on the programming side and until Ramsdell quit that was the staff. He was working full-time basically, and by this point I not only didn't have that kind of time, but also had a full slate of responsibilities beyond what Ramsdell was doing, so his aspects of his old role has been taken on by a few users, ecrvich, Indra and myself included.
At this point the users are certainly taking a more active role in the site than before, under the direction of myself (beer content) and Joe (everything else).
