| bierwabbe (15), , Belgium | | August 1, 2011 One of the best-kept Belgian secrets, but I see here that it isn’t so secret after all! Hidden in plain view in the small city of Aarschot is this gem. Good ambiance, terrific service from the proprietor Charles (a kindred spirit in his passion for beer), and a selection of beers (close to 500!!) that is still growing, with a great selection of imports, emphasis mostly on European brewers. Good snackies too, when we went they were serving food and when you’re hitting the higher-ABVs it’s a good idea to have something to eat. Such a find, I cannot recommend it highly enough -- and it’s right across from the Aarschot station, you can’t miss it. | | Powerstation (14), , Belgium | | May 2, 2011 Has a great sellection off beers, eers from Mikkeller, Haandbryggeriet, De Molen, Pipeworks, Midtfyns, Founders, Amager, Nøgne ø
But no food anymore. The Ambiance could be better and the service is ok. | | BartC (21), Lichtaart, Belgium | | October 31, 2010 A very nice bar with an excellent selection of belgian beers and some outstanding foreign ones (for example from De Molen). Charles really knows how a good beer should taste. | | Countbeer (104), Best of Eindhoven ohne Brauhaus, Netherlands | | July 27, 2010 [ Updated June 7, 2011 ] Been here last year and was amazed by the amount of great beers this café has. (There’s nothing wrong with Belgian beers, but the amazement is because a Belgian bar has so much foreign beers from the best breweries in the world, and is still growing, so I heard).
For instance, beers from Mikkeller, Haandbryggeriet, De Molen, Pipeworks, Midtfyns, Founders, Amager, Nøgne ø, and more.
The owner is one of the nicest persons ever met in a café. Totally devoted to his works, offered us some special high alcohol beverages, he gave us a special bottle to enjoy and he knows absolutely what he is talking about and is really funny too!
This place is right across the train station of Aarschot and has a small terrace. Place itself is pretty new and looks just fine.
Make sure to visit this place too, whenever touring Belgium. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | June 24, 2010 Fairly large place right across from the train station in Aarschot. The beer list is extremely well chosen by a man who obviously has a passion for his craft. Unique are rare finds abound, from Belgium , Denmark, Netherlands and even the USA! It took us more than 20 minutes to figure out the first beer to order! It was an extra special pleasure to drink with his honor the mayor, and even better when Charles and his wife could join us. Definitely worth going out of your way to find this place. | bieroloog (2), , Belgium does not count - explanation | | January 17, 2010 Very good bar. Lots of beer from Struise, Dolle and Alvinne. Good service. | | BigMomma (11), Leuven, Belgium | | January 9, 2010 [ Updated January 1, 2011 ] Found this bar after searching on zythos to ’Het Belang’ which is another bar in Aarschot. I’ve found a discussion over a new opened bar in Aarschot with 400 beers. So I dicided to go take a look. When you look at the bar from the outside it looks really like an old station pub. The inside also looks like that, but I don’t mind it. I’d rather like it! The ambiance is very good thanks to the very skilled host, Charles and his wife Lizette. The music is also very good and is coming from Charles his own stereo. As a youngster you will not like it, but on that age there aren’t many beer enthousiasts I guess. I think I’m a big exception. But for all other ages the music is good. So this bar has got the three things that make ambiance: good looking and comfortable interior, very skilled and friendly owners and a good choice of music. Now let’s rate the available beers. You can see them all at there new opened website. There are indeed around 400 beers available and they are all very good climitised. There even is a beerfridge with glass in the midle of the bar where you can look at a beatifull collection of beers.
The service is excellent because Charles is a beer enthousiast himself. He really does his work with passion and you feel that. If you ask him advice, he will definitely give you the right advice. Overall this bar really belongs to the best beer bars in Belgium and maybe even further!
| | thebeertourist (15), Oslo, Norway | | January 8, 2010 Belgians are a funny lot. Do they not see the jewels in their face or do they want to hide the goodies from others? Aarschot has got a new beer café that may very well be in the top three list in Belgium. A beer café that (unusually for Belgium) dares to import the best beers from other countries and where you will find beer from the very newest and smallest microbreweries in the country, given that the quality is satisfying. The owners are keen on quality, and beer glasses as well as toilet seats have standards of cleanliness rarely seen. I did not try their food, but it would surprise me if it does not live up to the standards they have set. My base in Belgium is normally Antwerpen, and this café has become my best "Antwerp" beer bar- less than 40 minutes away by train. For me the closing time is 10.30 pm in order to reach the last train back, but in fact the café, situated just across the train station, will stay open until after midnight. There is not much from the outside (or inside for that matter) that tells you what an extraordinary station café this is. But a look at their beer menu and a talk with the enthusiastic owners should easily convince you. Close to Scherpenheuvel, with this café (and the splendid Holemans beer outlet) the town of Aarschot has also become worthy of a pilgrimage, albeit of another kind. Chances are you will get no further than the station square. |
