| tderoeck (93), Gent, Belgium | | March 19, 2012 If you have never been to a brewery, like probably most of the people taking this tour, practically all of them loud and only partially interested Dutch people, then you get a clear explanation about the brewing process and about the brewing history. (In the last 5 years they have tripled capacity or something.) Other than that, it’s a very impersonal tour, the fact that you have to get into your own car to drive to the bottling line, some kms away, doesn’t help either. And then the biggest fiasco of this whole tour: it doesn’t end in the shop, where you start the tour. So if you want to buy some souvenirs or some bottles, you have to drive from the local bar, where the tasting is done, all the way back to the shop. As it was already well past 5pm, we didn’t take that risk of ending up outside a closed shop. What a commercial fiasco! I think the worst part about the tour, was that local bar. The music was playing incredibly loud, and was of the worst kind. A sort of "carnaval" music. No, don’t think of Rio, you’re completely off chart, think of loud humpapa music, with bad vocals and repetitive chorus. And then, the beers. Oh my god. If I were brewer, I would not put my visitors in such a tormenting bar, but what’s more important: I would make sure that my beer would be served in good technical conditions! We tried the normal Achouffe and the Houblon IPA. Both of them were flat, not enough gas in it. The normal Achouffe tasted very metallic and both of them don’t taste anything like I remember them. We didn’t finish our first glass and gave away our 2 left over tokens to some locals at the bar. One of my worst experiences in brewery tours ever. But I guess if your target group is loud ignorant Dutch people, you can pull this off. | | Bart (74), Brussels, Belgium | | January 2, 2012 Nice place stucked away in the ardennes. Friendly personnel. Ok seasonal food at the brasserie, nothing to fancy though. Short but to the point tour of the brewery and the packaging facility. Unfortunatly you don’t see everything from closeby, except for one installation. Afterwards some samples at a local pub. | | Oostende (11), Oostende, Belgium | | November 29, 2011 Good place to stop wen you are nearby.
Have some nice regional meal and a Chouffe and your day is OK. | | Martinus (70), Nijmegen, Netherlands | | August 17, 2011 OK place to visit when near (which is relative as it is quite remote. Friendly enough guides, nice (though standard) brewery tour and plenty of motion (since the bottling line is 5km away from the brewery). Drinks at the end were enjoyed in a pub near the bottling line, not at the brewerey itself, but in good atmosphere.
| | baxterfish (125), , England | | June 8, 2011 This place is surprisingly remote and you will probably need to ask for directions. Not bad - the new cafe is better than some of the trappist efforts. The beers are all widely available elsewhere(Achouffe, Duval, Liefmanas).Food is okay, but not great.
Ther are two other cafes close to the brewery which also sell the beers. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | March 14, 2011 Great place in a picturesque rural part of Belgium. Excellent food, friendly efficient service. the beer is OK, but it isn’t what it used to be. | | Countbeer (104), Best of Eindhoven ohne Brauhaus, Netherlands | | August 30, 2010 The beershop is small and has all the Chouffe drinks you want (beer and stronger drinks). They sell their Chouffe cheese which is very nice to taste with a Chouffe beer. The tour itself kind of sucked, just a touristic tour with something like an always-the-same-talk from the tour guide. Asking something made him answer quick and unpolite. Not really informal at all. I haven’t been in the Chouffe bar itself, but I have been in the bar where they let you taste Chouffe. That owner is a typical inhabitant of Wallonia.
All by all, the surrounding is great, the beers are ok, the people are ok and the tour just sucked. | | oldrtybastrd (56), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana | | April 10, 2010 Hit this place w/ SkyCop32 on our first whirlwind Belgian beer experience. Nice little brewery. Took the tour, got in free because they were trying to break in to the American market and wanted good word of mouth. Interesting tour followed up by a free La Chouffe glass and 2 free beers down the road a local pub. Outstanding!!! | | Borresteijn (97), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | June 10, 2009 Visited twice last year. First had a tour of the brewery, which was nice, also to see the new bottling and storage warehouse, a few km. down the road. Later had some Mc and La Chouffe’s with some nice food at the brasserie. Ambiance was almost absent, being the only two visitors at the time. Nicely decorated interior, the only thing that keeps amazing me in Belgium are the hideous plastic chairs and tables everywhere, giving you the impression you’re in a cheap shabby snackbar of some sort. BTW the Chouffe cheese (patachouffe) is, besides very smelly, excellent! |
