| Martinus (70), Nijmegen, Netherlands | | May 21, 2012 Feels more like a Irish pub than a Belgian beer café. Despite the not too late hour of visit (Saturday around 19.15) quite a few people inside were already drunk. OK selection, though rather overpriced. Not the best or most exciting place, but as it’s close to the train station it seems like it’s a not too bad place to start a visit of Antwerpen. | Daddybeer (4), Rotterdam, Netherlands does not count - explanation | | May 10, 2012 Nice place, with a huge variety of beers. We sat here on the terrace, which was probably noticeable in the service. It took very long before our drinks were finally served. And it costs this place money too, because a couple of customers that took a seat on the terrace walked away because there was no service.
But, the waiter was a friendly guy which we had a nice talk with. Though we asked him to surprise us and he brought us Mongozo.... A sort of dutch beer with coconut or mango flavour. If hell was a beer, it would taste like Mongozo.
Another negative remark.... I had to take a dump, so I went to the toilet. Someone before me had the same problems with some sensitive bowels. Only he decided to rub the shit over the toilet seat.. After seeing that, I had to take a dump and puke at the same time. That’s very hard, believe me. But anyway, I chose the ladies toilet....
| | BlackHaddock (175), , England | | April 2, 2012 Visited during the weekend of the 16th Essen Christmas Festival, December 2010.
Someone has spent a lot of money in setting this place up and it looks fantastic, really well done, a true olde worlde feel to it (of course all fake). Lots of beery bits (advertising boards and mirrors etc, etc). Upstairs the disco bar is all ’Austin Powers’ in design, with a smaller tap and bottle selection.
Now the not so good: during the day there is just one barman and a young lady serving the tables, all a bit slow, but very civilised. At night the music is so loud you can hear it a block away (as an American would say) and fills with mostly young, also loud people. It has an interconnecting doorway to the Irish bar next door which of course is owned by the same people.
I thought the selection on tap a little weak in beer enthusiasm, meaning there was nothing really different to choose and they all came from the larger producers, the bottled list is however impressive.
We used it during the day when quiet, we went back later, the noise just defeated us and it was so busy we left straight away.
It isn’t cheap either, the owners want a return on their investment. It is certainly popular with the Antwerpen younger set and I would recommend the less old beer geeks may well love it during the darker hours and those of us of an older dispostion will enjoy a more leasurely drink in the day, as we did, you could speak then (those not covered by my age suggestions should go early evenings).
So, an interesting addition to the Antwerp beer bar choices, but one I think will be visited just the once by most people with a discerning eye and palate. | palmbier (2), , Belgium does not count - explanation | | March 5, 2012 This place looks very nice, but is too commercial ( and expensive), and has no real "feel" for the beers. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | December 18, 2011 We came here on a Saturday evening and it was jam packed. Beers are the same you would find in any bar. Couldn’t really think of a reason to come back. | | PieterJan (10), Oudenaarde, Belgium | | December 14, 2011 I was here yesterday! Never seen such place: nice ambience and a huge selection of beers and a nice christmas atmosphere ; more than 500 beers, amazing! We had real belgan food; very good. We will visit again | DV84 (5), , does not count - explanation | | December 11, 2011 Good selection of beers, lots of memorabilia, nice atmosphere, the music was not too loud and the service was pretty ok. I’ll be back! | | beeroverwithme (29), Tønsberg, Norway | | November 15, 2011 Yes, it does remind one of TGI Friday’s and, yes, it does sport a massive disco ball in the ceiling. However, it has some redeeming features too; the service is fast, the food was pretty good and the beer selection would have made this a top bar in most other cities.
Though most of the draft beers were the "standard" ones, such as Stella, Hoegaarden and Leffe, they also offered Triple Karmeliet and Bourgogne des Flandres Brune on tap. And any place with Struise Aardmonnik on bottle gets an extra star in my book.
So, overall the impression is very positive - just make sure to visit early in the day, before it gets too noisy. | | Rastacouere (581), Montréal, Quebec | | November 7, 2011 A convenient 2-minute walk from the train station, this is the place where you’d end up if thirsty before or after getting in or out of the station. That’s fortunate because it would not be worth a large detour otherwise. The beer list feels rather mainstream for all its relative length and its proximity from the station removes any neighborhood feel it could develop in another area. Practical, but unessential. |
