| nbondi (39), Chicago, Illinois | | May 21, 2012 Stopped in on a Monday afternoon. Bar and stools are somewhat weathered, but everything seemed clean. We were quickly addressed, and all our questions were answered. Huge bottle list. Draft list is almost completely seasonLs and rarities. The only year-round beer I saw on tap was Two Hearted. Proper glassware, beer was properly poured, bar tenders seemed knowledgable, would definitely recommend. | bdwilliford (1), Georgia does not count - explanation | | March 30, 2012 Solid foundational beer selection with a continuous influx of new and exotic brews on tap and in various size bottles that offers exploration opportunities for any palate. Friendly staff complements awesome seating options: outdoor seating with a view of Little Five Points, a table upfront or at the magnificently long bar or the tables in the back of the store offer a more intimate setting. My favorite bar. | | Braudog (611), Hampton, Virginia | | February 27, 2012 Finally, I was able to whittle time to visit this place while in ATL. Wow, what a weird neighborhood. Hard to find parking, too. But this place mostly lives up its billing. Lots of moderately hard to find brews on tap, and some gastro-pub quality nosh. It’s an odd joint, super-cluttered. But they serve good beer in the proper glassware, and the food’s good. Mixed crowd of hip couples and plain weirdos. Efficient if disinterested server. Did I mention good beer? | | brigg (11), Charlottesville, Virginia | | February 8, 2012 I’ve been here twice, though I don’t remember much about the first trip (it was a while ago). Last time I got brats and sauerkraut and my wife got a veggie burger; both were very good, but didn’t blow me away (maybe a 7.5 for food, rather than 7). Service was friendly and food came fast, though drink service was just slightly slow. To be fair it was really crowded and we were all the way in the back. Great beer selection and I love how they have themed nights for beers on tap (at least they did my two visits; the most recent was sour ales). I’d like to go back many more times to keep trying it out - that’s as good of a recommendation as I can give. | | Westmeister (32), Atlanta, Georgia | | January 11, 2012 Been here many times and just now rating. Superb list. Great food. Knowledge very friendly staff. Absolute must go. In my opinion, only because of the more neighboor-like feel, this edges out The Brickstore. And I heard they are expanding!! | gsquared (3), , does not count - explanation | | November 29, 2011 Exceptional beers and very good food to boot! Fare is better than most gastro pubs I’ve been to. | | rickhall28 (12), denville, New Jersey | | November 13, 2011 The Porter Beer Bar is far and away the oasis or beer Mecca of Atlanta and certainly one of a very small list of great beer destinations in the SE. It’s in the quirky but cool Five Points area. The taps are abundant and the bottle list will keep you reading till the wee hours...and coming back frequently. I live up north but make sure I stop here whenever I’m in Atlanta. Amazingly the food is top notch...certainly gastropub quality. I also can’t say enough about the servers and bartenders who are knowledgeable and focus on enhancing your experience. Don’t miss this place if in the area. | | drinktomymood (16), Virginia | | October 4, 2011 Anytime I am in Atlanta, I make my way to The Porter. Great selection of beer on tap and great food to offer as well. Cozy bar, with mason jar lights and a knowledgeable enthusiastic staff! Wish I was in Georgia more often! | | Chudwick (47), Taylor Mill (KY), France | | August 31, 2011 Had a great selection and a huge list. The decor is vintage and cluttered. Large space, but quiet atmosphere - respectful crowd. food was delicious and service was personable and helpful. Not at all pompous considering the selection of beer offered. Had a Tsjeeses and two other Abbey Ales (I went a year ago and can’t remember them - I don’t know why I didn’t rate any of those beers either). I will definitely go back if I ever go to Atlanta again. | nathanieletc (1), Georgia does not count - explanation | | July 31, 2011 I’m probably completely biased, as this is "my" beer bar, but at the end of the day, they did have to earn it to get me to say that. The Porter has excellent staff, service, selection, and even food. If I were a foodie who knew nothing about beer, it’d still be a worthwhile destination, due to the husband-wife collaboration of Nick, the chef, and Molly, the beer and general operation person. If you make more than a few appearances, they are sure to recognize you and know you, and you’ll never be disappointed by the selection, a wonderful mix of a few awesome standards (Bernardus Abt 12, Delirium Tremens, and Duchesse du Bourgnone are on about 80% of the time, and you’ll almost always see at least one of them) and a really cool mix of others, some obscure and some well-known. Trust me, if you’re a beer person, you won’t ever leave disappointed.
For a true sense of the awesomeness of the bar, come for one of their beer classes, held regularly on the third Tuesday of each month. |
