| Bjarte1 (40), , Norway | | May 2, 2012 A nice restaurant with long communal tables. Good food and excellent beer in a nice location. A must when in Bamberg. | | Marko (169), Split, Croatia | | April 5, 2012 Typical German brewpub style I reckon, went here as it was the closest place to the station in the direction of the town center and we didn’t have the time for more. Service... eh, the waitress that served us did her job quick, but she might’ve possibly botched the order and wasn’t exactly the life of the party. Her colleague that came later, however, was in a much more convivial mood. It was relatively empty when we arrived, somewhat early in the day. The beers were generally good, a bit lighter than I’d hope for. All in all, worth visiting! | | BlackHaddock (175), , England | | March 29, 2012 Opposite the Fassla brewpub and just as good. This also has a courtyard type outside drinking area and two main drinking rooms inside.
Long tables in the main bar means you do not sit alone (the dining room has smaller oblong tables with covers on) and will most likely have to join someone already seated, no problems though, just get on with it!
The beers come straight from the wooden barrels on the bar, which is on your right as you walk in. The Lager beer is slighty smoked, the dunkel not.
Clean, tidy and welcoming, notice the green tiled heating stove in the main room.
A must when in Bamberg, as is the Fassla across the road.
| | madthom8 (52), Twickenham, England | | March 23, 2012 Visited March 2012. Went here three times on my Bamberg stay. Very nice, traditional place. I ate the Bamberg onion dish on my first visit and it was very good. The regular draught Rauchbier was outstanding, the bottled Marzen very good, but I didn’t get on with Ungespundets as my sample seemed excessively yeasty. | | Ernest (115), Boulder, Colorado | | December 26, 2011 Enjoyable place to hang out. Busy and can be noisy when full but there are two reasonably big rooms to find a place to sit so neither time we went was a problem. Food is of course the same old pig, potatoes, and sauerkraut that you see everywhere else. Good selection of beers, most of which are mildly-to-moderately smoked...to me, the standouts are the Märzen and Weissbier. Attentive, brisk service...not exactly warm and friendly, but not as cold as a lot of places. Went twice on this trip and had enjoyable experiences both times. | | TEJA (36), Stockholm, Sweden | | December 25, 2011 The resturant isn’t one I would go to for a god meal. The food is OK but the bier is good. Usually very crowded and hard to get a table, but they open early so if you get there at 10 in the morning it isn’t any problem. | | BriSava (77), , Japan | | December 21, 2011 Must-stop. It is near the Bamberg station and opens early in the morning.
Very cosy place and the staff is friendly.
| | SamGamgee (182), down the whirlpool, California | | December 19, 2011 Certainly has more selection than Schlenkerla, but I don’t like the beer nearly as much, even if it is still pretty good. More of a typical restaurant feel to it. We came in just before closing and it was starting to empty out but the waitress was very warm and let us get a couple rounds in before they locked up. Smoke for the masses. | | Braudog (611), Hampton, Virginia | | December 10, 2011 December 2011 - Crowded and full of spunky liveliness, Spezial fits the bill as the prototypical, classic Germany gasthausbrauerei. With motherly wait staff bustling about with steins and plates heaping with Germanic gastronomic pleasures, we had a great dinner and beers here, making new friends at one of the large shared tables. The rauchbier here is a little less aggressive than elsewhere, and they had more of a selection to satisfy those amongst us who didn’t care for rauchbier. The food was divine, simple and meaty and served in the massive portions you want when you order a schnitzel and spaetzle! Great place. (Brewery #566) | | TreinJan (169), Leiden, Netherlands | | December 6, 2011 Traditional Gaststätte with a small hotel. Brewery since 1536, with it’s own maltings. Five beers, three on tap at any one time. Lager, Märzen (smoke beers), Ungespundetes (not smoked, hoppy), Weizen/Weisse (wheat + smoke, from the bottle), bock (smoke) in season.
Good food, great beers especially if you are in for a more subtle smoke taste. |
