We really enjoyed our stay in the biergarten at the back of the Cafe in warm and beautiful autumn weather during an evening in early October. Our host, the waitress and the owner Gerhard, were just amazing, treating us with good food, interesting beers and splendid service. Café Abseits is very much different to all the bierkellers and gasthaus in Bamberg. It’s a freehouse with five different German beers on taps supported by about 70 bottled beers, most of them Germans and a few Belgian ones. The taps are available in 200ml bierprobe glass. Among the German beers we had some great tasting beers from Weyermann Versuchsbrauerei. It’s located ’on the other side’ of the railway station, easily reached by walking under the railway tracks. Well-made food, I’ had a very good bleu- pork. We came back a few days later and were treating with the same friendly hospitality as the first time. Great atmosphere inside, as well. World class, indeed (visited 09.10 and on Saturday evening 11.10.2014).

We went there today when being in Bamberg for two days on our way home from Austria. The Cafe is located outside / "abseits" the city centre, behind the main rail station. Took a seat in the beergarten due to the fine weather . Not much business at that time of the day, but the service was quite slow anyway. What a pity for a place like that. The beer selection is grande, just wonderful - found seasonals, locals, overregionals, crafts, Belgian etc.. Didn’t try the food but the menue looked fine to me. Prices were ok / bit over standard. I will come back at our next visit to Bamberg.

I think this is the best place in the area for trying different German beers (there are some Belgian beers too). Not centrally located but this was not a problem. Visited it on a Monday afternoon, it was full of people. Service was good, both waiters (a guy and a girl) were speaking English. 5 taps and you can try all of them (beer sampler 200ml of each) Apart from the sampler I tried a nice German pale ale and a very good German IPA. There is food (actually a quite big menu and the plates were looking interesting) but we didnt try it.

First place I visited in Bamberg. I had the luck to be served by the owner, a true beer lover. I let him guide me and I couldn’t have been happier. Everything was perfect and even the food was very good.

Well the hype for this place is a bit over the top. Selection was excellent. Did not try the food. Service was middle of the road as we had problems with the order and the service was very slow even when the place was not full. We were not allowed to sit inside even when the weather was not very nice. The place it self was rather dumpy but it has an excellent selection of beers. Might come back again when the staff is having a better day.

You better "choose" the right waitress/waiter. Service ranges from 0/10 to 9/10 imo.
Selection of beers is very good, some more belgian brews would be nice though.
Food is simple, but ok. They should probably specialize on s.th.

A fantastic cafe with a focus on Franconian breweries and a small selection of Belgian ales. They have bottles of the interesting Weyermann beers as well. Food is simple pub fare but filling. Gerhard was a great host and chatting with him gave great insight into the current Bavarian beer scene. He even gifted me with a bottle to takeaway! Will return again.
