| Braudog (611), Hampton, Virginia | | August 22, 2011 August 2011. This is essentially a store-front tasting room on the main square of Bar Harbor town. The emphasis here is on the store ... don’t show up expecting to buy a pint. There’s a small pilot brewery on site, but I venture a guess that the bulk of their beers are brewed at Atlantic (?). Brewery #537. | | adnielsen (277), Fort Collins, Colorado | | October 22, 2010 Decent brewpub. The beers are all decent. | | IPFreely (143), Sanborn, New York | | June 9, 2008 It seems as though Bar Harbor has moved their operations to the first block from Main Street in downtown Bar Harbor. New retail store interior with a smaller bar with some samples on tap. Lots of merchandise for sale, along with all of their beers including the kick ass Cadillac Mountain Stout. They do tours daily, but I just missed it when I stopped in and wasn’t able to make it the next day. Very friendly service. Nice people, pretty solid beers | | footy (12), scottsdale, Arizona | | February 26, 2007 Visited Tod and Suzi Foster’s House AKA Bar Harbor brewing in 8/04 and 8/06. Very nice people. Neat tour of the Brewing site in their basement. (Bathroom was in the Front of the house where they mixed and bottled their syrups.) Very pleasant and interesting people. Their tasting was a lot more crowded in 2006 than 2004. I only wish that you could get their amber ale without going to their house. Their Stout & Amber ale are excellent as rated. Their Lighthouse Ale is an excellent example of a British mild. Also very good is their Blueberry syrup. Their Thunder hole ale and their fruited beers along with their rootbeer syrup leave a little bit to be desired. All in all a great place and only 10 to 15 minutes from downtown. | | MartinT (469), Montreal, Quebec | | August 10, 2006 The picture you see up top is also the actual house of the husband and wife duo who run the brewery. The gift shop is nicely set up in the back yard of the house, which actually looks like a tiny wooden chalet near a jungle-overcome pond. They have all their beers available in the bottle here, but do not offer any beer on tap. If you want to see the brewery, you have to be there between 3:30 and 5:00pm during summer. You’ll also get a free sampling of every product they make. A neat little home operation with passionate people to boot. I was dissapointed to hear that their fruit beers and ginger beer are all their Lighthouse Ale with some addition. As is the Thunder Hole Ale. But the real draw here is the Cadillac Mountain Stout of course, and it’s as good as ever. Note that this brewery, although technically in Bar Harbor, is not even close to downtown Bar Harbor, but rather sits in the hamlet of Otter Creek, a few miles away from town. The Island Explorer bus to Blackwoods Campground (bus #4) will drop you off right in front if you ask for it. | | porterhouse (67), Alna, Maine | | July 17, 2006 Kudos to these folks. Stopped by on a summer weekday AM and missed the afternoon tour window but still enjoyed chatting with Suzi who came down to the gift shop to sell me some beer and who was very pleasant to chat with. Can’t believe they are making RateBeer’s #1 dry stout in the world from this little place all by themselves! But they are and very humble about it. And where else would you get to hear a tidbit like her husband (the brewer) and her pulling out a bottle of first year (’91) Cadillac Mtn Stout this winter and that it was "absolutely incredible." Word of warning - parking is limited here and you may find yourself parking along the side of a pretty busy highway. | daalamar (9), new albany, Indiana does not count - explanation | | January 10, 2006 Visiting this cozy little "brewery" was a wonderful experiance. after having theit Cadillac Mountian Stout at a local restruant in town my wife and I decided to seek the place out. It was early spring and not the tourist season yet, but Suzi came out when we pulled in the drive and was very plesant to speak with and very knowledgable. The entire production is run right out of their home and is basically a larger scale homebrewing operation. they have a small tasting cabin in the back of the house that was not open at the time. | mtullius (3), Saint Paul, Minnesota does not count - explanation | | August 26, 2005 Cadillac Mtn. Stout has been consistently rated one of the best (if not THE best) stouts in the world. Their other beers are also excellent and highly rated. And to top it all off, the owners, Tod and Suzi, are incredibly friendly and welcoming. One of the smallest microbreweries you’ll ever find, but one of the best. Worth a trip, especially since their beer is not distributed outside of the I-95 corridor in Maine. | | atpayne (28), Zionsville, Indiana | | June 18, 2005 Quaint little place. Husband and wife run it, work 9 months a year and brew out of their basement. Summer tours in a little cabin on the property and great beer. They only distribute in the Bar Harbor area. And they make a great stout, Cadilac Mountain Stout. If you are in the area this beer is worth searching out.
The tour is fairly standard, but it’s kind of interesting to see someone making a living as a professional homebrewer. They only make about 300 barrels a year, hand cap each bottle, and really seem to enjoy and know what they are doing. |
