| gEUS (17), Linden, Belgium | | April 14, 2012 This place has never lost the heritage image; it is still a very down to earth bar and restaurant, made by and for local people but serving the world class beers of 3 Fonteinen. Great local cuisine and plenty of beer dishes. There’s always a very vivid atmosphere and a pleasure to visit every time again (Used to live in the area) | | YULbier (209), Brno, Czech Republic | | April 5, 2012 Good selection of Drie Fonteinen products. Lots of dishes cooked with gueuze. Comfy terrasse and nice music too. Service was slightly sluggish on my visit. Beersel is not very convenient to get to by train but it is truely worth the hassle. In addition to this restaurant, you will find the café and the bottle shop around the corner where you can chat with Armand and fill your bag of his delicious nectars. | | cpetrone84 (34), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | January 12, 2012 This place is great, hanging at the restaurant for a while drinking Armand’s great gueuze amongst other offerings. Food was fantastic, prices were very good. Went up to the store and hung with Armand himself. He was extremely kind and very open to discussing his beer and beer in general. Got a quick tour of the barrel room and met his wife as well. Great spot! | | Alain (10), , | | January 5, 2012 If you want a real lambic, geuze or kriek that ’s THE place to be!!!! | | Rastacouere (581), Montréal, Quebec | | November 8, 2011 This legendary lambic producer is located right in the middle of Beersel, perhaps the best base to explore Payottenland. They make some of the greatest lambics in the world, but they also have a mighty fine restaurant, looking like nothing from outside and having a slightly upscale feel taxed by the burden of the years inside. First surprise, it’s a very large restaurant, probably seating more than 200 with the terrace. Combining this with the ageing interior did not make for the most pleasant atmosphere sincerely. The service is very efficient and quick though. All the waiters seemed to speak Flemish of course, but also English and French. The food was delicious, we of course had to try the Flemish stew à la gueuze, a superb rendition. I had a great payottenland salmon myself and it was marvellously cooked. This place is also your best bet for constant supply of draught Drie Fonteinen Lambik and Faro, not necessarily as exciting as their gueuzes, but excellent examples. A few older vintages can be tasted with your meal, while the brewery’s store is right across the corner, featuring the Armand 4 series at 24 euros a bottle. Not every lambic producer has a café or restaurant, so take advantage of the ones that do, especially that their opening hours are convenient and that they’re so close to Brussels and fine lambicland cafés. | | MrChopin (89), Baltimore, Maryland | | November 6, 2011 Easily the best of the lambic spots we visited. Arriving right before the end of the lunch hours (they don’t serve after 2 or 3p), we enjoyed draft lambic, then the ’97 bottle. Service is typical European, allowing us to enjoy the patio out back which is unfortunately squared in and thus affords no views of the countryside. The food is stellar (the salmon is a must).
Then we walked over to the tasting room to meet with Armand, soft-spoken and open, sharing stories and hopes for lambic and future brewing. One hour, then two roll by as we open bottles
Then he accompanies us to the shop as we buy lambic, glasses, shirts to go. A fantastic visit, never rushed but perfectly accommodated. I look forward to years of visiting the master. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | July 31, 2011 Always full of locals and those passing through, it’s worth coming here just for the food. Of course, the fact that they have world class beer to accompany your meal doesn’t hurt either. Kriekenlambik and lambik served the traditional way, in pitchers, and Armand’s full range of geuze, including a few very old and dusty bottles. A pilgrimage site, which of course must include a stop at the tasting room. | | lushawn (164), Boston, Massachusetts | | June 16, 2011 fancy restaurant in an upscale neighborhood. just across the street from a large old church. average age of customer was 65. restaurant atmosphere. stone floor, wooden walls. just missed the taproom.... didnt feel quite comfortable in this restaurant rating beers in the corner by myself while groups of elderly people filed in to eat. oh well. service was subpar by belgian standards. meh. | | callmemickey (14), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | | April 26, 2011 A simple country bistro with simple but quaint decor. Several visits have had slow, but pleasant service (two lunch time visits took over two hours from start to finish). A nice stock of standard Drie Fonteinen beers (Faro, Lambiek, Kriekenlambiek, Oude Kriek, Oude Gueuze) plus the ultimate value: 15Euro 750ml bottle of 1997 Oude Gueuze. The food here is phenomenal. The carbonade is the most tender and flavorful I’ve ever had and the mussels are fresh and well prepared. Being next to the brewery doesn’t hurt either. | | Martinus (70), Nijmegen, Netherlands | | April 21, 2011 Rating for the restaurant. Visited back in 2008. Friendly staff, good ambiance. We had brilliant food, they’re good with game, venison and fowl, so I suggest going when it’s hunting season. They served some difficult to get beers, like Hommage, though I guess availability varies. As we speak Dutch I don’t know how well the staff copes with English speakers.
Be sure to plan a visit to the brewery too! |
