| nearbeer (98), Knoxville, Tennessee | | October 30, 2009 Sweet Home Alabama! I’ze born there, and now live in Tennessee (with dam-near the same fooked-up alcohol laws); so I’m allowed to be sarcastic. I’ll check back again when the good ol’ boy politicians and Liquor Lords figure out they can make more money by selling GOOD BEER to proletarian-dolts like me. It looks like that will be sooner for Alabama, which is a real embarrassment to Tennessee. | Riotbeard (2), Birmingham, does not count - explanation | | October 19, 2009 If I lived in a state other than Alabama, I might be inclined to turn my nose up at Vulcan Beverages, but it has the best selection of beer (at least for stores), I have seen in Alabama. They have Bells, St. Bernardus, and a lot of other beer that are not easily found here. The price of the mixed six pack is rediculous though, so definately ask before you start filling up. The help are very nice and farely knowledgible about craft brewers (I asked about Stone and New Belgium) and their future availability in the state. | UABPHD (2), Alabama does not count - explanation | | September 30, 2009 It’s nice to be greeted when I walk In. I like the personal service. The place gets between 3 to 10 new beers a week. The keg prices are the cheapest around. | | Butters (150), Virginia | | March 2, 2009 The bars across the windows made me worry a bit about the area that this store is located. What horseshit hours this place has! Definitely call ahead before you decide to pull off the interstate. The selection is good for AL i suppose, but it is expensive as hell. The bumpkin that runs the place seemed nice enough. Dear god i can’ t wait till this state frees the hops! | JustinFromAL (5), Birmingham, Alabama does not count - explanation | | December 22, 2008 I visit Vulcan Beverage whenever I have the chance. Admittedly the prices (especially on the mixed six packs) are not as good as they could be, but this is a great beer place. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and the best selection to be had in Alabama. | beckstien (2), bham, Alabama does not count - explanation | | May 9, 2008 This place is impressive! I could not believe there is a store like this in Alabama.I counted 213 types of beer. I will make this my stop every time I come to Birmngham. | | wcampbell (10), Central, South Carolina | | November 16, 2007 Had a few beers that were hard to find, of course nothing over 6%. Mixed six packs were cool. They cost about 2 dollars per beer, which is not a good deal for most of the beers. | | CaptBier (19), Birmingham, Alabama | | October 3, 2007 Well you have to take into consideration that this is Alabama. Considering that, the selection is nice. A lot of beers you wont find in other places. It looks like its in the slums, the inside looks like the place is out of the 80’s but the coolers are cold and the owner is a nice guy. We’ll be back | | JonnyC22 (10), Huntsville, Alabama | | September 27, 2007 It doesn’t matter if they have every beer in Alabama, because the selection will still be awful. The 6% law is crushing us. Free the Hops is helping, but it’s going to be a while.
As other raters have said, you can design your own six pack at this place, but it’s expensive as hell. | | beckstein (10), | | June 23, 2007 [ Updated May 7, 2008 ] This place is absolutely terrible. There are other places in town with as good of a selection and more friendly staff. The selection is decent, but not the best. I was told the warehouse was out of a particular beer, but I found it at Overton and Vine the same day. A large gentleman assisted me. He didn’t know the difference between a pale ale and a pilsner. Prices are outrageous because they bank on tricking you into thinking they have the best selection. |
