| Immy (107), Virginia Beach, Virginia | | April 29, 2012 Liked this place a lot! Excellent selection of taps and bottles, food was pretty good. I was there to watch the NHL playoffs, and the staff was very accommodating tuning to the channel my team was on. Staff is about 50/50 on beer knowledge, but the beer list is comprehensive and explains enough about each beer that questions should be rare. Liked the rollback patio area. A good stop for the thirsty! | | Brigadier (127), Bloomington, Indiana | | April 28, 2012 The best time to visit Yogi’s is during one of the special nights. For example on Sundays all Indiana beers are $1.00 off which makes Dreadnaught a steal at $4.50 a pint. The tradeoff for the great selection of locals and regional offerings is service that borders on forgetful.
I think it may be because it is directly across from the university but it always feels like I have been forgotten by the wait staff. For the best service sit at the bar. The food is nothing special - I’d order just enough to absorb the beer(s) that you plan on ordering.
Will I come back here? Because of the specials and one off taps certainly. However do not expect the same level of attention and service you might get at a better bar. This is a diamond in the rough that needs some polish. | abcmer (1), , does not count - explanation | | February 22, 2012 Premier Bier Bar in the Midwest | | DWestrick (21), Ft Wayne, Indiana | | January 1, 2012 always had a good time at Yogi’s. | | ultrashuai (22), Bloomington, Indiana | | December 14, 2011 Best tap selection in Bloomington and changing constantly. The beer is very reasonably priced for what you’re getting and the $1 off specials they do (Sunday = Indiana, Tuesday = Michigan, Wednesday = West Coast) make it even better. I come here for good, relatively cheap food and excellent beer.
They have periodic special tappings of rare beers (usually regional) and occasionally have "tap takeovers" where a specific brewery (again, usually regional) will be offered on all of their taps.
Where they lose is atmosphere and service. I’ve started sitting at the bar consistently because the table service is just so bad. It’s not just the fact that the servers know absolutely nothing about the beer (they don’t), but the service I’ve had here has just been generally unfriendly and unresponsive. Downside of a college town, I guess. But the bartenders are great: they’re friendly, quick and know their beer.
If you go earlier, you will likely not encounter the college element at all, but the atmosphere drips it. And who can blame them being so close to campus.
It’s also cavernous, has terrible lighting, and the bathroom situation is just odd. When there’s a big sports game on, it also tends to get loud and crowded, as it does when the weekly sports radio broadcast occurs.
But I still really like this place and come here often. | | JCB (120), Durham, North Carolina | | August 26, 2011 Very nice to go back to Yogi’s on a recent visit, with some great friends at that. Bummer that the AC was on the fritz during this infernal late summer but fans and a pleasant atmosphere made it okay. Always been kind of a strange mixture of scenes here, with oldsters coming in to watch the IU game, fratties trolling while screens blare, and others who appreciate the surprisingly deep craft menu this place has generally boasted. It’s better now than I can ever remember it being, with tons of locals and regionals, some of the best national crafts, and a few Belgian treats. Went for a bunch of Sun King, New Albanian, and the like, but the menu was extensive. Great service, as always. I look forward to the next time. | | illinismitty (275), Nashville, Tennessee | | May 29, 2011 Typical sports bar ambiance. However, they have a pretty decent beer menu. It’s organzied by style, and draft offerings are highlighted in red. I had no problem finding something that I wanted to try, and they have a 4 beer sampler for $4.25. They do have some certified beer servers, but ours was not one of them. However, she was extremely friendly and prompt. I never understand why people complain about a server’s beer knowledge. As long as they know what is currently on tap- I am fine. Definitely worth checking out. Expect to find local and regionals like Upland, Sun King, BBC, Bells, Three Floyds, Goose Island, etc- including seasonals. | | AguynamedTodd (75), Illinois | | February 6, 2011 Went there to eat/drink before a basketball game. We sat at the bar. Service was excellent. Bartenders were very knowledgeable about the beers they served, a big plus for a beer geek like me. I had a Founders Double Trouble, which was very good. Beer list is pretty good; if you go to their website, they have a list of beers they serve. Food and selection was better than most places I’ve visited. It’s pretty close to campus which means it gets pretty crowded on game days and days where good fball and bball games are on TV. | | tmongoose (41), Louisville, Kentucky | | January 16, 2011 first visit to yogi’s yesterday. love the atmosphere it was quiet when we walked in but by 4pm it was packed. great selection beers on draft and in bottle and you can get a small sampler as well. the food is pub grub and it got no complaints from..our bartender hollis the magnificent was great. not a great deal of beer knowledge but she knows enough and kept us going all afternoon. | | deyholla (90), Waukesha, Wisconsin | | November 17, 2009 My favorite sports bar in Bloomington. This is mainly due to the great beer selection (for Bloomington.) Plenty of American craft beer available with an emphasis on Indiana beer. It is a huge place, so you can usually find somewhere quiet if that is your style. Food is what you would expect from a sports bar. Bartenders don’t seem to be that knowledgeable about beer, but other than that the service is fine. |
