I guess I can call this a neighbourhood bar. Seems to attract a non-craft crowd given the presence of big screens and NFL but the beer list suggests otherwise. Must be close to 30 taps and on my visit there was a Barrier and Singlecut tap takeover. Efficient service (nothing more) and food was fairly priced (I opted for the pulled pork burger). Much more a genuine pub that many US bars. One of the few NY places that seemed kid friendly.

This is a neighborhood bar. Itís dark, itís unassuming, and they have a good amount of beer. I got a glass of the Sierra Nevada weizenbock which was just alright. They had some local stuff as well that I was able to sample. The service was attentive and while the one server was getting the drinks several others stopped by to ask what I wanted. Prices were a little high, the selection was pretty good, and they serve food but I didnít order any. There isnít much else to say about this place. Donít think Iíll make this a regular stop but itís certainly worth a look at the tap list.

Mugs is a great beer bar in a great beer area of NYC. Although Iíd been here before I never rated it so Iím using my latest visit to amend that. The decor and atmosphere are great. The staff is also quite good (at least in my experiences). The food is very good pub food with a few higher end items too. The real star is the beer selection though. 32 taps is quite a nice number...but more important...they donít waste any of them. The selection is always deep with no throw-awayís. I highly recommend a special trip here...in fact itís very easy to couple this with a visit to the Brooklyn Brewery first (as Mugs has the food youíll want after going there).

great wait staff, lots of variety on tap, lots of special events. good prices. nice backyard. one of nycís pioneer beer bars. and they put the rangers games on the t.v.! the only criticism i have is that i wish they would put their mussels back on the menu -- they were awesome, and i miss them!

A regular bar that happens to have an excellent range of beers on tap and in bottles, and for good prices too, especially for a "hip" part of NYC. I agree with bmerzís comments - it is unpretentious, just a good, classic beer joint. There is a bar room in the front, and quieter tables in the back. They have special events pretty regularly, I gather, so that is another reason to be aware of this place. The waitress was friendly and helpful. I plan to visit again.

Have dropped by Mugs a few times, most recently in March í11 for the íSplit Thy Brooklyn Skullí strong ale festival
They ordinarily have around 30 beers on tap from across the states, with a good 10 or so from NY and neighbouring states.
On this visit I stayed purely on the rare (and strong - all 8% ABV+) festival beers.
They were reasonably priced at $2.50-3 each and were served in a 6oz glass
The place was busy, but the service was decent considering and we simply stood a few feet back from the bar and sampled somestrong stuff including :-
Arcadia Pappyís Bourbon Barrel Old Ale
Brekenbridge 471 IMP IPA
Left Hand Oak Aged Imperial Stout
Great bar, decent festival, worth a visit on a normal night also.

Mugs is a classic and so deserves to be. Thereís no pretense or really any style thatís not sort of itís own not trying to have style. It rocks...just a good pub...except wait...do they have a 2002 of Brooklynís Monster Barley Wine, a bunch of Cantillon, and a 20 taps of rare stuff from an event they just did....all for good prices served in 20 oz pint glasses by serious bartenders...yes they do. They have dedicated lines to non-beer nerd classics...respect. Brooklyn Brewery did a special for their 20th anniversary last weekend. More respect. Cheers Mugs!
