vferg (5), Livingston, New Jersey does not count - explanation | | October 27, 2009 Basically the place is very small, tight getting in and out and basically if you had to go I would try to visit on days in the summer when you can enjoy a glass in the amazing backyard beer garden area. Nothing beats it. The service was nice and attentive but sometimes felt distant which was odd at times. But who cares about those things, your here for the beer! and the beer here is fantastic! Decent sized tap list with about 6 always on and a great bottle list. Mostly you would come here if you were craving a great sour or lambic since that’s what seems to be about half of their stock which is fine by me. Only problem is they are a bit pricey at times and would only come here for special occasions. They definitely have some of the best bar events in a year and if you can attend one of those I think your rating for this place would go up just a bit. Overall Its one of the top bars in Brooklyn offering some of the most unique and best beer out in that area. | | jbender (18), Hatboro, Pennsylvania | | October 18, 2009 I actually did walk past this place....Didn’t have any identification besides the name on the mailbox, which luckily my friend was able to spot. It actually looked like a barbershop with the type of seating in the window. When I went in it had a very quaint feel with all of the ummm pieces of flair (if thats the right word). Luckily we were able to beat a rush at 5 and grab two bar seats. When I looked in front of me I realized why this place had the ranking it does. There was easily 100-150 bottles (50-75 from belgium alone) available (written on a chalkboard and stored underneath the countertop). Unfortunately I could only try two in the hour I was there (20 minutes of that deciding what I wanted to try). The bartenders were extremely knowledgeable, with the one picking out the perfect belgium sour to go with my friends cheese and bread. The cheese was very good, but cheese and meet platters are pretty much all that is available foodwise (bringing the lower food rating even if what is there is good). Also, there are only about 8 beers on draft (but are all spectacular). Plan on spending money...all bottles are 8$ or more (up to 30 for 750mL). Awesome place to come and enjoy something that can’t be found anywhere else in the USA. | | goatboy (16), Alberta | | October 3, 2009 [ Updated October 8, 2009 ] We almost walked right past this place, the only sinage that we were at the Spuyten Duyvil was a tiny address on the mail box, This place had a strange collection of antiques in the bar including large posters of the female reproductive system and a growing fetus, it felt like a second hand furniture store. we arrived in the early afternoon so the only food was cheese and meat sandwhiches, I truly felt we were in the wrong bar and the real spuyten was just down the street. the staff one girl at the bar, was very knowledgable and friendly and of course the beer selection was very good. unfortunatly there was no beer list/menu so you stand at the bar and figure out what you want, it was slightly chilly so we stayed inside but they had a nice outdoor patio area in the back. the real treat was the grocery store Spuyten Duyvil a few blocks away, they had an amasing selection of hard to find beer, I bought Fantome and Avery Products, nice staff as well. although the selection was great at the bar, I dont feel I would want to go back there. | | vtafro (18), , New Jersey | | September 29, 2009 Would like to go more often, but it is a hike out to Brooklyn. Some great beers frequent this bar, rare bottle list can be expensive. Events are worth going to if you have the cash. | | WeeHeavySD (100), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | August 7, 2009 Been here twice, 3 years ago, and tonight. Its changed 3 years ago, no crowd, tonight packed with hipsters. Good bottle list, sadly limited tap selection which was disturbing, yet it shifted pretty well. I like this place and it has cool food occassionaly, my gf had a good pickle plate tonight for one. Outdoor seating is huge, huge! | | BarKeeper (11), Brussels, Belgium | | July 27, 2009 Hello !
This place is remind me the place where I work, in belgium !
Crowded of youth and less youth people, two barmen, a lot of humour hidded and less hidded everywhere.
The service was more than good, the only place in the east coast where they pour the beer more than correctly (with an another place in Portland Main).
Selection is really nice, I really enjoyed the place.
[And for eating, just cross the street and go to the garage in front (ask to the bartenders).] | | Beerapprentice (11), Hopatcong, New Jersey | | June 23, 2009 First time I went to Spuyten Duyvil was sometime in January on a Saturday night. The place was packed and I felt like a sardine in a can. It’s a tiny place and when it’s packed it can be annoying. Went again in late June on a Sunday afternoon and boy what a difference. The outdoor section was open and we had a few beers outside. Nice set-up. Good selection. Would recommend anytime except on a Saturday night!!! | | Pwn3d (38), Manhattan, New York | | May 25, 2009 Went here with JRedmond and DeputyAndy. Looks like an antique shop from the outside, which caused my friend and I to miss it completely before it opened up at 5pm. The first ten minutes in this bar were shared in complete silence as there was no music on and people kept their conversations muffled. A little awkward. Once the music came on it was a bit more inviting, cool in the know retro atmosphere. Great beer selection a bit pricey, but the taps and the seasonal (oktoberfest) bottles were all $8 and under. | | j12601 (45), Poughkeepsie, New York | | May 2, 2009 I know that often times the hip trendy places don’t need a sign... but man, I walked past the place twice, and that was with looking for the number, seeing the number, taking a cursory glance into the empty windows and figuring that it must have been an old abandoned diner. I don’t think it would kill them to put a little tiny sign out front. Inside is laid back and the trendy local crowd seems to be quite happy paying $8 for a pint. For 6 taps and a cask, they sure get a lot of stuff on. Aside from changes just for the event I attended, three kegs changed while I was there. And a couple of those had been on for less than 3 days from talking with the bartenders. Bottle list was nice, with some oddities in pricing. Couple things were as cheap as retail, a few seemed really high. Staff was friendly and helpful, and did a nice job putting up with the kind of folks interested in getting piles of 3-4 oz pours over full sized ones, even late into the evening as the crowd went 2-3 deep around the bar. | | GeneralGao (220), Iowa City, Iowa | | April 20, 2009 This is a cool place. Not sure about the second best in the US of A, but it’s pretty good. Small, cozy. Short bar. Somewhat kitchy decor. Short, but interesting tap list. Wish they had more taps. Visited on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed. The beer was overpriced, but you’re in NYC so everything is overpriced. If you like BBQ, cross the street and eat at Fette Sau. |
