| SaintMatty (128), Uppsala, Sweden | | May 13, 2012 A cosy corner pub with a great atmosphere, friendly staff and a fantastic range of beers. Great for Cantillon, but also for other many other fantastic breweries. A bit more difficult to find than their other pub, but it’s well worth the effort. | | YULbier (209), Brno, Czech Republic | | April 2, 2012 Hipster bar with an excellent selection (but limited compared to the Fontainas location). Vibe is good: cool music, nice interior. Clearly the place was understaffed on my visit: only one employee in service for both inside and the patio. Service was slow. Overall a very nice place for the people of Saint-Gilles, but as a tourist, the Fontainas location is far more convenient (for location and selection), which was probably the point of opening the 2nd location anyway. | | BlackHaddock (175), , England | | March 29, 2012 Opens at 16.00 every day (I think), we arrived at 16.10 on Saturday 29th Dec 2007 and the place was full by 17.00. Not that there is a lot of room to start with, 30 chairs maybe. A mix of locals who knew each other, two dogs, one child, some loners and a few beer tourists like us filled the place nicely.
A corner bar in the shape of a triangle, homely and neat. Wood and brick with a load of windows on the outside, just as you would expect. The three walls have advertising boards and pictures of beers etc, all very ’Olde Worlde-Belgiuquie Style’.
There are 3 boards with the tap selection dotted around the place and also a cheese board, we had 150grams of Chimay with some brown sliced bread.
Two Cantillon beers were on tap along with a Christmas Beer and four or five others, there was also a ’British handpull (beer engine)’ on the bar, but it was not in use. The bottle book was interesting. We had a 2006 corked and caged 75cl Abbaye Val-Dieu Noel after a couple of beers from the taps.
Well away from the normal tourist area, but still seemed a very safe place, it is also close to a huge prison that looks like a castle, so picture opportunities too. A good map and the use of the complicated and complexed but intergrated Brussels transport system will get you there ’no problem’.
| | dreadnord (16), Castel Volturno, Italy | | March 16, 2012 Nice place. Very clean and professional looking. Staff is freindly and knowledgeable. Wonderful selection and very fair prices considering what they have on tap. When I went in they had roughly 5 different Cantillons on tap, a 3 Foneinen, DeRanke and some other oddities. Some really tasty salads and quiches to eat as well. Highly reccomend a stop. | | frontabobby (10), , | | February 6, 2012 Idéal pour passer un moment reposant l’après midi dans cette ambiance chaleureuse avec une carte bouteilles impressionnante. De quoi y passer de longues heures! | Swaroga (4), Brussels, Belgium does not count - explanation | | February 4, 2012 This is my first place I discovered couple of my favorite beers over 10 years ago. Back then I asked their suggestion and was always well advised. The folks there, they drink beers that’s for sure. This place can be easily crowded because it is just too small. but that is another of their charm. It’s far from being touristic and often , we find regular customers, mostly students and hipsters. The choice of beers served from tap is limited but vary from season to season. There is an amazing choice of bottles and sometimes we find some foreign exceptional brews. That’s where I drunk some of the Stone Brewery masterpieces ! Anyway it’s a nice place and always be on top for it’s authentic Brussels charm. | | gEUS (17), Linden, Belgium | | January 22, 2012 Visited on frequent occasions - Different beer selection than the one at Fontainas, but also very varied. Atmosphere is calmer, especially in the summer. Service is OK. | | F_radar (30), Paris.Bxl.Geneve, France | | December 27, 2011 Plus cosy, selection plus large en bouteille, service aussi pro et agreable qu au centre, un seul regret des bieres au fut un peu froides. | | Fin (243), Merton, Oxfordshire, England, England | | December 19, 2011 Myself and Loz visited here Saturday 17th December 2011, we had to wander the neighbourhood for a couple of hours as we had failed to take note of the 16:00 hours opening time. The beer list is very impressive and easily the best that I encountered on this visit, with many impressive rarities for those keen to seek out something a little different. Pricewise it was possibly a little on the steeper side, however if you choose something on tap then there were certainly a decent and interesting selection at very reasonable prices. The female member of bar staff was very knowledgeable, helpful and worked the bar really well, offering sound advice. We walked there and back and we were based in Molenbeek but it was a pleasant walk and the pub is an interesting part of town away from the tourist tat which drags some of the other Brussels establishments down a little. I really liked this bar, however maybe not quite as much as I was hoping. I suppose one fault that I found was that much like many of the other great beer cafes of the world its one failing is that for atmosphere and all round pub banter it just doesn’t work so well, if it could condense the atmosphere and warmth of the three alleway pubs in the centre of town then it would be a world beater on every count, sadly it just fails on the atmosphere rating. |
