5 reviews for Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits
| drowland (42), Tallahassee, Florida | | August 5, 2009 Worked here for one year while finishing my Masters at UNI. The ambiance is to be expected - a relatively plain liquor store with goofy alcohol signs on the walls here and there. The selection is pretty good considering it’s Iowa and Iowa has those goofy 6% laws where any beer over 6% is taxed as liquor and must be ordered from the state warehouse. My presence greatly influenced and encouraged exploration and the finding of more and better beers. There is a small selection of homebrew junk, basically the essentials for last minute needs. The value is average - typical liquor store. The service is a mix depending on who is working that day. I knew about beer and wine, and the managers know about wine, but half the time it’s full of UNI students or community college students who don’t know much about beer or wine, or simply aren’t old enough to drink at all. Overall, it’s definitely the best liquor store in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, but that’s not really saying a whole lot! | | CanIHave4Beers (54), Des Moines, Iowa | | February 4, 2009 They certinally try, I get the feeling that sometimes they try more than others, but the selection is good. You can almost always pick up a few trappists and other odd singles. Generally speaking they have what almost every other Iowa store has, nothing to rave about. I did pick up a few 95’ triple bocks there for what that is worth. They also have a piddly little homebrew section behind the counter. Either way I do end up finding myself here whenever I am in my hometown. | | KAF (68), Coralville, Iowa | | October 22, 2007 All you need to know about this place is that it is a grocery stores liqour store. They have finally gotten a bigger selection of single bottles in the last year and a half but it is mostly domestic with a few macros. There really are no rare beers here so I don’t know why that is checked (may be rare for Cedar Falls), the import selection is quite small actually. Customer service is nothing special and most employees seem to know very little about beer. Location is convenient and you can go next door to get a bite to eat at Papa Murphy’s or Quiznos. | | Erdinger2003 (20), Ames, Iowa | | April 16, 2007 A good place to buy fresh beer when I lived in CF. They have however since gotten a new manager who doesn’t know a whole bunch about beer. He’ll tell us young guys about the new Budweiser products even when we bring up a six pack of Alpha King. I just bought a six pack of Fuller’s London Porter with a before date of Oct ’07. It was good, but nothing like my first one (famous words). | hero27 (5), Iowa does not count - explanation | | July 12, 2006 Located about 2 miles east of the University of Northern Iowa campus..right on University Avenue in Cedar Falls. The building and interior layout is really nice...with wide aisles and well-organized selections.
The real beer is in the standing cooler right ahead of you (and to the left), when you walk in. Very good selection of 6-packs of microbrewed domestics, all in a standing cooler.
Sierra Nevada, Rogue, Dogfish Head, Three Floyds, Goose Island, Anchor, Shiner, Leinies, Capital, Flying Dog, Summit, Hornsbys, MacTarnahan’s, Pete’s Wicked, Great Divide, Fort Collins, Buffalo Bill’s, O’Fallon, Left Hand, Pyramid, Sam Adams, Grant’s, Boulevard, North Coast Brewing, Grand Teton, Millstream, etc, etc...
for nearly every one of the brewing companies listed above, there are at least 3-5 different selections.
Have a decent European selection also.
Overall, I am really impressed with their domestic selections, which they are adding to all the time. They regularly have beer samplings and do an excellent job of providing a wide assortment of seasonal beers as well..
The employees are friendly and quite knowledgable.
The great location and impressive selection for a grocery store chain make it easily the most popular place to buy beer in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area. |
