| GT2 (196), Washington DC | | November 21, 2011 Top of the Hill, or "Top O" as it is exclusively called by UNCers is sort of the place to be seen slash frat hangout masquerading as a brewpub. The only beer that really gets ordered is Old Well White, which is very neutral and essentially in-house brewed Blue Moon. The rest of the tap list rotates very slowly and at times they will have a nitro stout on tap. Beer is decent. Prices are higher than the rest of Franklin Street. Versus other college bars like Goodfellas or He’s Not Here, this is definitely a New York or DC bar transplanted into Chapel Hill so they "exclusive upper class" feel gets really old. The only reason this places exists is its view over Franklin Street. If you are trying to get a seat here during UNC game day, good luck. If you don’t want to be overrun by drunk college kids, visit here on off peak hours or for earlier dinner. Food is decent, but unremarkable given the price. In short, not worth going to as an adult beer geek unless you are a ticking whore and must try their beers. | jtd6628 (8), North Carolina does not count - explanation | | June 30, 2011 I like that places more now but the first time I went inhere it was not a good experience, there fault not mine. The clientele is very greek. | | craftycarl21 (59), Washington, Washington DC | | April 30, 2011 Cool place on the 3rd floor of a building overlooking Franklin street. Very cool bar with a great balcony. Food is good, beer not so much. Their IPA is honestly one of the worst "hoppy" beers I’ve had in a long time. Still, some of their other things were average, so not bad overall. | | nickd717 (80), San Francisco, California | | April 29, 2011 Well, this place is what it is. It’s a fun college bar that also happens to brew beer. You’ve got a bunch of dude/bros in their obnoxious Carolina blue (I’m a Duke fan) as well as a bunch of coeds. There were about 5 house brews on tap when I went, although it seemed like most of the clientele was drinking well drinks, BMC, and other crap. The beer is better than I expected, which is to say it’s about average. Some selections were enjoyable, while others were uninteresting. I ordered a mushroom and sausage pizza, and that was pretty good. Prices are about average for the area. It gets crowded, so expect to wait for your beer, and don’t expect the server to be very patient. As a final remark, not that I’m looking (getting married soon), but the tail quality here is respectable. If you’re a young guy looking to find a nice young lady for...um...pleasant conversation, this is your place. If you’re a young woman looking for a nice young guy though, you’re probably out of luck because this place is full of Carolina d-bags. | tallboy2 (8), Charlotte, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | June 17, 2010 The best thing about this place is the view from balcony seating--if you can get a table. Service is always poor to average, beers are average to good, have never raved about any of the food, and clientele is the expected mix of Greek cliques, recently-graduated students who never left town, and polo and khaki-clad 40-somethings. | | rman18 (12), South Amboy, New Jersey | | January 26, 2010 Nice place and good beers but very expensive. I didn’t try the food so I can’t comment on that. | | Drake (295), Charlottesville, Virginia | | September 13, 2009 Located on the third top floor of an office building. I sat at the bar, so I didn’t quite see how the view is, but I imagine it is nice during the day. There is an elevator up, as well as stairs. The elevator opens up right in front of the hostess stand, which is kinda weird. Lots and lots of seating including a large outdoor patio. I did not try the food. Large wavy oval shaped bar in the middle. Big, big yuppie vibe here, in staff and customers alike. The beers were all tasty, but all came out a little watery. Parking MAY be tricky, but there is a cheap pay lot a couple blocks away. Worth a stop if you’re in the area. | | hargettfamily (14), charlotte, North Carolina | | June 12, 2009 The beer is all good, the location above and overlooking franklin st. is amazing. the food is not very good. | | JCB (120), Durham, North Carolina | | January 12, 2009 First time at this establishment. I’m giving the ambiance a 4 just for the handsome bar, and the deck was impressive too. But the acoustics were lousy, a fact brought home by the bellowing crowd. Fine service, and I didn’t try the food (hence no comment). But I found that for a brewpub offering its own wares, the five taps were extremely meager. On top of that, the beers themselves are average at the very best. I might return if there was something special being offered, but with all the beer destinations in the Triangle there’s no reason to seek this one out. | | LawBadger (10), Raleigh, North Carolina | | November 29, 2008 Food is very good but entres are a bit overpriced. Service is usually quick, but make sure to get reservations if you are going for dinner. Gets busy and turns into a bar after 9:00pm. If you can, try to go on a gameday for a great atmosphere. Beer is okay but nothing special. |
