15 reviews for The Charleston Beer Exchange
Riotbeard (2), Birmingham, does not count - explanation | | October 8, 2009 Small but fantastic beer store. I recently moved to Alabama from Charleston. Due to restrictive beer laws, Alabama does not get a lot of the best beers. I rely on these guys to keep me up to date on harder to find beer, heck anything sold in a bottle larger than 16 oz. I call them regularly and reserve beer to pick up on my next visit to Charleston. Very nice setting, great selection, and an incredibly knowledgable and helpful staff. Also these guys along with Coast Brewery work toward changing the beer tasting laws in South Carolina. Cannot say enough in their favor. | | Teege (12), Orlando, Florida | | September 29, 2009 Wall to wall beer and good beer at that. Especially considering that there are not a lot of places to get good craft beer in Charleston. Rich took very good care of my girlfriend and me when we were there. Brought back three boxes of stuff I can’t find in Orlando and could have gotten twice as much. | | DrBayern (39), Morehead City, North Carolina | | June 9, 2009 Visited here on a recent trip to Charleston, and I’m glad that I did. In the heart of historic Charleston, this place is not very big, but they make the best of their space. I spoke with one of the owners for a while, and he told me they had only been open six months. The selection is impressive for a shop of this size in business for less than a year. He seems to have pretty much all of the American craft brews that are available in SC - Stone, Bell’s, Founders, Ballast Point, Great Divide, Avery, and the list goes on. They also have six taps form which they can fill growlers. Two of the taps were from Coast Brewing in Charleston, an IPA and a double IPA. The Belgian selection was impressive, among the better that I’ve seen, and that includes places like Stateline, Julio’s, Bruising Ales, Bottleworks among others. Had several Cantillons, Drei Fonteinen, Dupont, etc. IN additon to the Belgians, they also have an excllent selection of other European beers, Mikkeller, Nogne O, etc. Prices were comparable to other similar shops. Definitely worth a special trip if you’re in the Charleston area. | | darn1207 (24), Tallahassee, Florida | | May 25, 2009 Cool place. Visited while playing a soccer tournament in Charleston. Small - but they pack a lot of quality into the space they have. Mostly American crafts - I was able to find several Founders, Southern Tier, Ballast Point and Moylans I hadn’t tried. They also had the local fare (Coast, Duck Rabbit, etc) and ten or so on tap for growler fills. The owners were there and were obviously beer lovers that knew their stuff. Definite stop anytime I’m in town. | | ksurkin (10), Norfolk, Virginia | | April 1, 2009 had the pleasure of visiting the store on my recent trip to Charleston. this was of course after the owners pulled 9 amazing, rare, and want list beers off the shelves and held them for me until i could stop by! store is extremely clean, small, but very well laid out, and fits very well in the charleston downtown landscape. selection was great. picked up mikkeller brunch weasel, breakfast, black hole, all others pale, balast point dorado and victory at sea, peche mortel, black albert, and of course a growler of bear republic double rocket. sweet! the growler station is simply amazing and it sucks i don’t live closer. the owners are true beer geeks and really know there stuff. they love to talk beer and appreciate their customers. my box was packed for my, my growler taped and labeled, and they threw in a free pint glass. definitely the best beer store in SC. can’t wait to visit again! | | MullMan (29), Bloomfield, New Jersey | | March 27, 2009 wow, stumbled into this one just walking around town, my wife found it - good eye! small store but clean with nice wooden floors. they are very selective and only stock great bottles. i bought a duck rabbit porter, de struisse black albert, and a amager hr. fredericksen! on tap this week are Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, Foothills Torch Pilsner, COAST HopArt IPA, Stone Double Dry Hopped Old Guardian, Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale, Moylans Hopsickle Imperial IPA, Stoudts Smooth Hoperator, Founders Breakfast Stout, Ballast Point Bourbon Barrel Black Marlin Porter. After a while I noticed a sign at the top of the cold case that read, "no, we don’t sell fat tire ale." Ha Ha!!
| amp811 (2), Charleston, South Carolina does not count - explanation | | March 18, 2009 Probably my favorite beer store. The owners and his employees are all friendly and open to questions. They’ll just sit there and talk to you about anything and everything, making for a great atmosphere. Growlers, 64 oz glass jugs, are the major attraction. CBX holds nine beers on tap (as of March 17th, 2009) that they rotate constantly, and you can come in with your Growler and fill it up with any of these nine beers for a relatively low price. Rare beer Tuesday is always tempting, and the CBXchange club is like icing on the cake. If there is anything negative to say, it’s that the store is so small that they just don’t have tons of room for bottled beer. | | aracauna (32), Georgia | | February 16, 2009 This place was really cool. It’s right off of East Bay St. on the way to Rainbow Row from the bulk of the restaurants on East Bay. Be forewarned, the place is tiny, but since they aren’t selling any liquor, wine, or even BudMillerCoors type beers, the space is well utilized. They even have taps to sell growlers of keg-only beers (although they can’t sell you a pint to drink while browsing yet, unfortunately). Scott was working the register the evening I visited (he goes by BeerExchange here) and it’s really nice to have a serious beer geek there in the store to answer any questions or give advice.
I have to say that I wasn’t expecting much out of the beer scene on my trip to Charleston. South Carolina isn’t known for being very friendly to alcohol, but I honestly can’t think of a beer store that would put the Beer Exchange in it’s shadow, at least in the Southeast. This is a must stop for any craft beer lover visiting this colonial city. | tribeincident (4), sc, South Carolina does not count - explanation | | February 13, 2009 a very needed spot in charleston.. people are excited
| | Beershine (261), Where Climate Suits My Clothes, Vietnam | | February 6, 2009 This place is incredible! no-nonsense bottle selection and a tap lineup for growlers, all jammed into a tiny space in the lovely historic district. A special keg is tapped each Tuesday for a tasting, and are super rare beers you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else. We got the dregs of Allagash Fidelta. WTF? I’d move to Charleston just to make this my local store. |
