| Onenote81 (72), Winston-Salem, North Carolina | | May 2, 2012 Originally reviewed: 9/24/10. I was in town for business for a few days and this place was at the top of my list to visit. The building is red now, not gray, so don’t go by the picture when looking for this. The owner Mike was not around when I was there. At a wine tasting or something. But there was a very friendly woman behind the counter. Very helpful and cheery. Chatted with her for a bit. As is the tradition, since this was my first visit I got to pick any glass I wanted for free. For some reason, I thought it was a mug only, but I grabbed a sweet Allagash stemmed glass. Love it. Very nice gesture. The selection, in all honesty, isn’t as great as I thought it was going to be. They had a good number of special beers, most notably their Belgian section. But overall, this place didn’t blow me away. Maybe City Beverage has spoiled me some. The prices were all pretty good. Some cheaper than I can get here, but some more $. They also carried a good German selection which was cool. I will come back here each and every time I am back in town. Nice store. | AppVin (4), does not count - explanation | | February 20, 2012 Mike Brawley started the Charlotte craft beer scene. Mad props since 05’ Mike, keep on keepin’ on! | gehenherzog (1), North Carolina does not count - explanation | | February 20, 2012 Brawley’s Beverage is the best store in the city. Even with it being quite a haul for me to get there, I would much rather shop here than anywhere else. No matter who is working the counter, you will always get friendly and knowledgeable service. The selection is 2nd to none in the state. | | CanIHave4Beers (69), Des Moines, Iowa | | December 13, 2011 How is it that I never rated this place? It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been but this place was wonderful. I defiantly had sort of a "is this the place" reaction to it that I think most folks have when I pulled up. It’s sort of like Archer in Chicago where it looks like a corner liquor store on the outside but has an excellent selection inside. Everything is well tended to and it doesn’t look like any of the beer was sitting around too long. I got a bottle of Smuttynose Wheat Wine at about half price because it was "old". The folks who work here are very friendly and I had a nice time visiting with them both times I was in. They even gave me a Saison Dupont glass because it was my first time coming. Generous, knowledgeable, fairly priced store, with a very good selection of beers... it’s hard to ask for anything more. | | Ernesto987 (54), Connecticut | | November 14, 2011 whole in the wall, disorganized and dirty. Very beer passionate man behind counter very eager to help. Nice place, good local growlers in beer fridge. | | Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | October 9, 2011 Don’t underestimate this place by its exterior appearance. Large selection of stuff from the region and around the world. Very friendly and helpful staff. Don’t forget to check in the Beer Cave! That’s where most of the local stuff is, including a bunch of growlers. Great place. | | TURDFERGUSON (117), Carrboro, North Carolina | | August 16, 2011 Solid place. Good selection of newly released imports, and the ever expanding list of of domestic craft beers available in NC. Dude who owns it apparently keeps some special stuff behind the counter for those in the know. | | tia (33), Sandston, Virginia | | July 28, 2011 Very nice and helpful (and the guys in the lawn mower shop next door where helpful, too, when I locked my keys in the car- if you’re from Charlotte they have good karma from me).
Anyway, I was a little in a rush and this was my first NC store so their selection seemed good and their service was great! I see everyone talking about Mike, but Mike’s mom is great too (and I heard the same from some other Charlotte locals).
Ambiance- no frills. Value- prices not cheap. But definitely seemed like a go-to spot for Charlotte. In fact, this is the type of place I’d go if I lived there- local flavor and neighborhoody. In fact, I am super-excited to find a place to go that’s about three miles from my grandparents’ house! Will be back on my next visit. | | PaulUnwin (50), Pinellas Park, Florida | | July 3, 2011 I love small places like this, I would come here rather than go to chain stores. Owner wasn’t there but Miles (think that was his name) was pretty helpful although I knew what I was looking for, and can always use Ratebeer on my phone if I’m not sure right? He found the last 2 bottles of Founders Devil Dancer so I was happy. Spent my weekly pocket money in there and would come back. Sure they could have more beer variety and stock, but if I lived close by I’d probably get most of my beer there. | | msante79 (253), Mount Prospect, Illinois | | April 23, 2011 Nice little store. Not the biggest selection, but they have quite a few brews I have not seen elsewhere. Not the best place if your looking for local brews, but you could tell they specialize in bringing in beers that you won’t find at most places. Cooler area had growlers from Green Man and Catawba Valley. What makes this place special is the owner. Michael provided the best service I have ever experienced from a bottle shop. Only picked up a couple of bottles from Olde Hickory and he let me have a free glass. Cool place. |
