I haven’t been there for a while, but last time I was there they didn’t even brew on premesis, they shipped in their beer from California, and the beer isn’t even that good. Imperial Stout, the Tatonka Stout was actually worth the buy as was their special seasonal Grand Cru. Those were probably the only two I would say that are worth getting. And, I’ve found, that the more upscale the brewpub, generally the less interesting their beer. With this hypothesis in mind, I was both dismayed and pleased by how nice the decor of BJs was. They had a pretty wide selection of beer; I even saw they medaled at GABF...although this was in 1996 (and the bar was risen considerably since then). The place was busy; service at the bar was glacial and uninformed. I had one beer - a "Belgian Wheat Grand Cru," which appeared to be a misunderstanding of Belgian styles; it tasted as though someone tried to make Blue Moon "big." Weird, and combined with the relatively lousy service, Flyer and I were motivated to move on to the Rusty Bucket on Polaris. While I’m kind of panning this place, I should mention that I’m planning on returning on Friday. The food looked good, and BJs is more desirable than other area dining options, like Cheesecake Factory. | | Dogbrick (423), Columbus, Ohio | | January 28, 2008 (Visited 07/2007): Visited this place for the first time months ago but the crowds have not died down much since then. Located near Polaris/I-71, parking in the front and rear is scarce most nights.
The inside is spacious and pleasing to the eye, with lots of brick and windows. The garage-door patio is kind of cool too. The bar is located on the right side, and is standing-room on weekends. Restaurant seating takes up the rest of the place.
BJ’s serves around 8 different beers at any given time, from lighter fare like a Kölsch to the Tatonka Stout. They also made a cider and their own root beer. The beers are above average for the most part, with the specials like Lasto’s Oatmeal Stout being pretty good. They also offer craft beers on draught like Arrogant Bastard if brewpub beers aren’t your thing. In bottles there is a pretty good selection too, with a good representation of Belgians in particular.
Service here is good. Bartenders and servers know the beer pretty well. Service is dinged for them forcing you to buy a new growler rather than refilling though.
BJ’s food is really good, if a bit pricey. Pizza is probably the biggest draw.
Overall, BJ’s is a welcome addition to the brewpub scene. Despite the fact that they are a chain and don’t actually brew their beer onsite, it is great to have a place outside of the downtown area that represents craft beer. | | sliffy (86), Columbus, Ohio | | July 20, 2007 Stopped in around dinner time on a Wednesday night. The place was fairly busy at the time. Service was a bit slow, but nothing too bad. The waitress knew the beer menu pretty well. Got the sampler, the beer is pretty average, but what can you really expect from a chain brew pub. Food was pretty good, chili nachos were solid, and the "deep dish" pizza was quite good. It’s a decent place, but it seems that they don’t rotate beers there very often, only one seasonal, so I don’t see myself going back very often. | BabyJoe692 (5), Pickerington, Ohio does not count - explanation | | June 14, 2007 Had a large number of their beers, representing many styles, on tap. All were good and the food was tastey also. The waiter had a complete knowledge of the beers as well as good pairing options. I’ll definitely stop by again when I’m on that side of town. |
