| BlackHaddock (175), , England | | April 2, 2012 Enter via an alleyway, through into the main bar area. Three redundent coppers straight in front of you behind the bar, all had crisp boxes sat on them.
The front room is square with a raised portion to your left, through there you enter a huge semi-covered courtyard/garden area. To your right as you enter the garden you can see the brewing equipment.
Upstairs they were holding a ’Polish Cultural Evening’. I didn’t venture up there but I could hear the dancing from the toilets.
6 of their beers on tap, 3 handpulls (none in use). Too busy to chat with any staff, but they were pleasant enough when serving you (at the bar). The bottle list was poor, 11 boring beers with heavy prices.
I liked the copper lightshades, the wall to your right as you enter (displaying beerfest adverts) and the overal feel of the place. Certainly worth the walk out to it (via the Bierhaus of course). Friendly, noisey, upwardly mobile group of customers, no riff-raff in here. Wooden floors, with tiles around the bar, for spillage reasons I’d guess.
The music was at the right level on my visit, just above background volume. They were playing Irish/British Rock, semi-heavy metal stuff like ’Stairway to Heaven’ and the likes.
My only complaint, no cask beers! | | bmerz (61), New York | | March 15, 2012 Lovely place and clearly not your average establishment here. They care about beer that isn’t Guinness or Murphy’s (not that doing so is bad). The beers were (~2 years ago) quite respectable. | | Beershine (540), The Sunshine State, Florida | | March 9, 2011 Atmospheric little brewpub in Cork, it’s not outside the city as another rater said, it’s just across the river from the cutsie old town...very casual and comfortable interior with good opportunity for conversation. Quite a wide range of house beers, none are particularly exciting but most are well-made. | | redsandwiches (10), | | January 14, 2010 good store, great staff | | beerfest5 (58), Simsbury, Connecticut | | January 4, 2010 not a bad place if your in cork. a little outside the city but not beyond walking distance. inside what looks like a church, hence fransiscan. usually three or four brews available from the brewery, plus 8-12 different bottles. had a Rebel Red that was pretty good. for a country that has a reputation for drinking, its beer selection and microbreweries are nil which makes this brewpub not only unique but a welcome sight for foreigners who like beer. | | Braudog (611), Hampton, Virginia | | September 19, 2009 September 2009 - Visited early on a Sunday evening. With its huge outside sitting area, this place was a nice break from the routine in Ireland, offering 5 solid German-style house beers. The lads at the bar were friendly, and the crowd was an interesting mix of European tourists and young, hop Corksters. With no food of their own, they ordered pizza for us from down the street, a good pie, but pricey at 20 Euros. Fun spot. | | mabel (211), Toronto, Ontario | | August 21, 2009 Visited on a Wednesday afternoon in May, there was a nice covered patio in the back (and resident kitty) but we stayed inside the dark bar where they were playing some fun fast music. You can tell a lot of people come here because the floor is so well-worn, in that tanks-behind-the-bar friendly local brewhouse kind of way. Six of their own brews were on tap and some visitors like Boon, Leffe, Rekorderlig, and Chimay. Didn’t try any food other than Tayto crisps, but the service was very friendly and chatty after he got sorted out (we came right when they opened at 3pm). Great place. | | jerc (211), Toronto, Ontario | | May 25, 2009 Nice little place. Did not open until after 300PM when we were there. Atmosphere varies, nice dark wood in the main part with brewing tanks behind the bar, bit more of a patio atmosphere toward the back. Bartender was okay when serving us. A bit more forthcoming later when I starting asking more questions about the local beer scene. It was pretty quiet when we were there - we got there early and had to wait for them to open the doors. Strikes me as someplace that might get quite busy later in the evening. I could see spending a night there. Beers were all serviceable but non particularly stood out. Had a guest tap from White Gypsy when we were there. | mayordenis (3), does not count - explanation | | May 21, 2009 Lovely little spot - Hosts Seasonal Beer Festivals - Brews a decent range of it’s own Beers, and a fair amount of beers from the continenent. Great Staff, who know there stuff. | onlyrocknroll (3), Antwerp, Belgium does not count - explanation | | February 7, 2007 Great atmospere here at night or when the weather’s fine. The beers brewed here are ok but there’s a reasonably good selection of Belgian, German, Czech and British beers. One of the better bars in Cork for nightlife but not a great place for a quite beer. |
