I’ve been by Mr. Dunderbak’s too many times to count before actually going in and checking it out. I’m really glad I did. The food is excellent. The selection of beer is decent and the ambiance is great. If you’ve never been there I suggest you check it out!

IIt’s easily my favorite place at the Volusia Mall. You can navigate the narrow aisle between the bar and the deli to see the beer, cheese, meat, glassware, and other novelties that line each side, finally reaching the back where there’s more of that and wine too. Food selections are more deli and German influenced but make for a good pairing with your drinks if you are hungy for a snack or meal. Between Thanksgiving and New Years the addtional folks at the mall can make it very crowded and not as enjoyable, but still worth a visit if you can find a space to sit.

Visited in June 2009 and May 2010 for dinner and drinks. Mr. Dunderbak’s is where I purchased the "Beer Will Change the World!" poster featured in my profile picture. At the time I thought it was so uniquely hilarious that I decided to grab it. Now I realize it’s a generic and widely available item. Oh well. Atmosphere is quiet, mostly local patrons who mind their own business. Kooky decor full of retro beer signs, this place functions as a bar, deli, grocery and beer store all at once, in a mainstream mall that is otherwise devoid of culture. Service is decent enough, especially if you get the owner. He grabbed me a cold bottle of Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary as I was paying my tab. Great, friendly guy. Our waitress on the other hand was slightly aloof, but reasonably quick with the drinks and food. The beer menu is nearly unmatched in Daytona. On my latest visit they had Southern Tier Un*Earthly, SN Torpedo IPA, Oskar Blues Old Chub, Samuel Smith Yorkshire Stingo, and Unibroue Quelque Chose, among countless other offerings. McK’s Tavern, Shores Festhaus, and Ormond Wine are the only other places that come close to the selection here. Food is superb and authentic German cuisine, including various schnitzel and sausage dishes. I had the excellent Jaeger Schnitzel with a mushroom gravy sauce and fresh baked beans. It was the perfect companion to my IPA and scotch ale. Overall, Dunderbak’s is one of the top places in the city to enjoy quality beer and dining. If you’re in the area, drop by to have a brew with some top-flight European grub.
