Generally speaking these Hy-Vee wine and spirits are OK places to buy beer, most of them kind of try to bring in some micros and have an ok selection. Some try harder than others and in the Des Moines metro none of them try as hard as this little gem we around here call Drug Town. The atmosphere here is fairly super market like and nothing to get excited about. The service is outstanding as well. Usually Hy-Vee workers are nice enough, but the people they’ve got working here are the cream of the crop they’re always super friendly and helpful. However they rarely know too awful much about beer. They almost always have three or four of the Goose Island reserve series including BCS. They have the Boulevard Smokestack series. They have a good selection of Trappist beers. They have Robert the Bruce and Boulevard Imperial Stout right now. There is a good singles cooler, and sometimes it has Pere Jaques at $1.50 a bottle in there. It’s about as good as it gets for an Iowa grocery store liquor department. |
