70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 13/20
Visited midday on a Friday. As with most Hy-Vees, beer is located in the seperate Wine and Spirit store on the side of the building. Easy to find location by the Drake campus. Selection seems to be a touch smaller than the other two DSW Hy Vees I have visited, though the beers on offer were just as solid. Nicely organized selection, mix a six and single selection featured most of the beers. Hot beer of the moment Toppling Goliath had 4 beers on offer. Many local DSM beers available as well - particularly strong Exile and Confluence selection. Friendly service, good prices.
70 = ★★½ (Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time)
I only use the total score, not the component parts.

Best selection I saw in my short Des Moines visit. Lots of refrigerated mixer sixer options. Was asked if I needed help twice.

This has the best selection that I have seen at any Hy Vee I have visited in Iowa or Missouri. You can tell that they are really trying and they have a fairly large refrigerated singles section. I was pleased to find a few new to me brews and also a sprinkling of some high gravity items. At least they are making an effort. Now if only DM can catch up to Iowa City or even Cedar Rapids in having at least one quality beer store.

This is one of the best places in the Des Moines Metro to purchase beer. They try to work with the state the best they can to get the higher gravity beers in, but sometimes the state does not like to assist them. I like to drop in at least once a week to see if anything new and exciting has came in to Iowa. The staff is always friendly. Just beware of the guy that gives out free samples. He will pester you into buying beer. It’s very strange and if no one is in the store he follows you.

Most of these Hy-Vee wine and spirts places have a good selection, this is one of the better ones. It used to be the best but it’s fallen off signifcantly in the last year. The atmosphere here is fairly super market like and nothing to get excited about. Usually Hy-Vee workers are nice enough, these folks are no exception super friendly and helpful probabally more so than most other locations. However they rarely know too awful much about beer. There is a good singles cooler, and sometimes it has higher ticket beers at $1.50 a bottle in there. It’s about as good as it gets for an Iowa grocery store liquor department.
